Cleaning old taperecorders??
Get the 244. If one of these units has problems, 90% of the time it's just a worn belt that needs to be replaced. The heads should still have some life in them if they've been properly maintained.

risks when buying a space echo on ebay ?
I would say don't buy vintage gear on ebay if you cyan't solder. I've received a couple things that were damaged during shipping. Sometimes it's just as simple as a connector that worked itself loose inside the unit when it was jostled around by the people who load the big brown trucks. maybe you'l...

Tape Type for a Tascam 244?
I would not reccomend using any cassette shorter than a C-30 (thirty min. tape). Because, in actuality, when recording on a portastudio & at double speed, you only really have seven and a half minutes of recording time with a C-30. <BR> <BR>In other words, the normal running time of a casse...

I use small "y-cable" RCA type splitters sold just about anywhere consumer electronics are sold. These allow you to distribute an effects send to two different inputs or an effect return to a pair of channel inputs. <BR> <BR>Cheers, <BR> <BR>Looter

A reggae acoustic drumkit - QUESTIONS
Whats up? No reggae drummers out there to shed some light on this for us? I'd also like to know the best way to explain/teach one drop to a drummer.

Guitarist looking for dub songs that use alot of guitar...
Haha, this is the problem with getting a bunch of musicians into a single unit that will play reggae. The guitarist wants to play songs fearuring guit. key players want to do tunes w/ keyboard leads, etc. But dub isn't like that. No one person is really featured. If anything, it's the rhythm sectio...

Older 456 is known to suffer badly from "tape shed", sitcky binders in the tape come off as it ages and breaks down. One way to fix it is to bake your tapes in an oven set to low heat, of course. <BR> <BR>I've never tried any AMPEX tape loops in my echo chambers but my experience has been that most...

Go find a 8-track cassette and pry off the shell. The tape used in these is silicone "lubricated" for long life. Right now I'm using Leonard Bernstine live in concert to load my tape echos!

I don't have experience w/ this machine. I guess I was making the assumption that it's a tape loop type when it maybe is a cart type?

Do you have a 1/4 inch splicing block? As this will help greatly when making the new loop.

PS: The head design for portastudios is also made with with more space in between each track pickup to reduce crosstalk. It will play cassettes recorded on normal decks, like Mike mentioned with one side of the cassette playing in reverse.

Tape Type for a Tascam 244?
Tascam portastudios are biased to use "type II" high-bias tapes. If you use a "regular" type one cassette the sound quality will suffer greatly. <BR> <BR>I use Maxell XLII C-90s in my 246, allthough TASCAM now says not to exceed a 60 min cassette because the longer the cassette, the thinner the tap...

from what I've read the springs are probably the same but the electronics feeding the tank and picking up the reverb signal may have been refined. <BR> <BR>See: <A HREF="http://www.foi.hr/~rlogozar/mbsn1/AnalogSynthsRolandTapeEchoes.html" TARGET="_top">http://www.foi.hr/~rlogozar/mbsn1/AnalogSynthsR...

i think the email you need is: <A>parts@tascam.com</A> <BR> <BR>tascam can provide you with a photocopied version of their older manuals for nominal fee. [Edit: I'm not sure if TASCAM is providing support for their discontinued models at this time. But I guess you can always try. A friend of mine sa...
