KORG Electribe ES-1 Rhythm Sampler
again, I've never used that unit, but I know I generally dont like using built in FX on hardware for the following reasons:

1) often hard to get to the settings if you have to remember a sequence of buttons or menus
2) FX often can not be easily applied to individual sounds. One...

KORG Electribe ES-1 Rhythm Sampler
I've never used it, but looking at the specs, it might be fine if you just want to trigger drum samples to your mixing board. Then again, you could use any sampler (Roland 404, etc) or any drum machine for that as well. The big drawback I see to this is only two outputs, I'd want something w...

Can you offer artist sounfing similiar to
the obvious answer would be to check other works by Jah Shaka or Mad Professor. If you want an overview of MPs work, try "Method To The Madness" which covers work hes done with lots of other people. A decent Jah Shaka CD is "Jah Shaka meets the Fire House Crew"

Anyone used a Yamaha QY70 or QY100?

gonna weigh in with interruptor on this and say you could get a good Mac or a so so PC as well as a multi channel audio IO unit for that money and probably do the job better in software.

I personally use an iMac with either GarageBand (free) or Logic Express ($300) and a Pre...

Who composed the Tempo Riddim ?? - license issue
oh man I dont envy your task! Finding the owner of a jamaican copyright is not easy, but *most likely* its going to be the "producer" of the song rather than any of the musicians, performers or studio staff. This gets more complicated by the fact that you want to license the underlying riddi...

Discussion Board Update
I'd also like to chime in and say how much I like this board and to thank interruptor for making it available. I've only ever found one other dub related board and the main focus there seems to be talk of religion rather than making dub (some of you know the place I mean).

How can you Dub live?
I've been considering this topic alot more lately. My studio setup is iMac/Logic/Mackie MCU based and I simply refuse to move it around. I considered powerbook|ibook/Logic & a Tascam US428, but I no longer own a functioning laptop so thats out of the question for now.

I've heard that the "d...

Free delay/modulation AU plugin "Model" for OSX
Mac OSX dubbers on a budget will enjoy this one, its a delay with lots of modulation/filtering features. Its much more focused on the filtering features, but the delay sounds good too. Cant beat the price.

...

Neil C

pretty sure it is a real bass since that disc used the Roots Radics as I recall. FWIW a little distortion on a bass track can produce great results if used right

Analog or digital ?
mr mc: I think DC wasnt talking about software based plugins, but strictly hardware mixers.

I'd assume that since Cubase also accepts VST plugs you could do the same.

Mackie hardware mixers are OK in my book, but some folks like Chris Randall of audiodamage.com is not fond of em.

Mike, thanks for that article, I'm gonna save that link to show to some folks I know. Obviously you and I stand on different sides of the A/D fence but I respect your stance completely.

The control surface "example" in that article is a Tascam US-428 which is actually a great unit for start...

Analog or digital ?
Sounds like you have thought out the two basic options:

1) an audio interface with lots of in/outs connected using analog cables to your mixer
2) an audio interface eith ADAT (or other) digital outs connected to a digital mixer.

In either case you need to be sur...

Mixing On-The-Fly / Using subgroups
mike,

I agree that the "hands on" feeling is a must for dubbing. Even though I use a computer production setup, I mix with a Mackie MCU control surface and the 8 channel sidecar with a C4 for knob controls. I end up with 16 faders +1 master fader and 48 knobs (32 on the C4 plus the ...

Mixing On-The-Fly / Using subgroups
Arghhh! Once again one of my posts seems to have dissapeared.

Anyways, to re-summarize and add something: I've tried this method before and didnt like using a bus fader for one instrument but I've found it useful for applying the same effect to multiple channels, like when you want to surge...

Mixing On-The-Fly / Using subgroups
Mike,

The case you just described seems like a workaround if you dont have channel inserts on your analog mixer. Am I correct? If you have channel inserts then why waste a bus for one track? Maybe I'm missing something here...
