Basic question about soundcards with multiple outputs
Sorry about this but I'm far behind the times in terms of tech.. Suppose I buy a soundcard that has multiple outputs, ostensibly for 'surround sound'. Can I route a track to each output channel individually? The software I have in mind is JACK and Ardour multittracker. I plan to route each instrumen...

BBC documentary - The Story of Jamaican Music
http://vodpod.com/search/browse?site=dailymotionrss&q=story%20jamaican%20music I've just seen this documentary (in 4 parts) and I think it's worth watching for the interviews and the connection with the past, but to avoid unrealistic expectations when watching, beware that: 1) It doesn't cover dub a...

Hi Riddim Surfer. Interesting thoughts... of course the Bobos are a minority and they have an inalienable right to practise what they profess as their faith regardless of anyone's opinions about what they're doing. The music has its own power, as the roots of reggae are firmly entrenched in the poli...

Agreed, however be careful with the alcohol on rubber parts. There's a special stuff you can get to clean rubber parts. On metal capstans it will be fine, but make sure it doesn't hit any rubber. Same with lubricant - most petroleum-based oils will destroy rubber wheels and belts. You might find som...

My thoughts exactly.. only that I'm sure it's a lot easier for these guys to just criticise all reggae music out of hand than to try to make a superior music to the 'slack' producers and win the people over in that way. The guys in the 70s struggled through oppression, poverty and serious violence (...

Unfortunately I no longer have the game. I think the movie had more to do with the dehumanising effect of technology, and life in the modern technological world. The world in which Blade Runner is set is lonely, and is obsessed with the appearance of being other than what it is. The example of the a...

Alas, many things have changed for the worse since the 1970s. A friend recently showed me this video: http://www.dailymotion.com/relevance/search/reggay%2Bis%2Bdead/video/x4729o_reggay-is-dead-french-subtitles_music It's so sad, that this culture we love has to go the way of fanaticism and blindness.

Wow, that brings back memories of the movie clearly! I remember this little tune distinctly - it captured my curiousity at the time (although I didn't think of it as a dub tune). Unfortunately I don't know the composer.. However it does sound like an eastern melody (eastern as in Middle Eastern or A...

Just another quick heads-up on Cowboy Bebop, which is in the middle of a set of repeats on Anime Central. The name of the episode containing the dub music I mentioned earlier was 'Bohemian Rapsody'. And just generally, the drum programming on this series is really masterful. The composer has sampled...

No worries Mike - thanks for all the information you have supplied. I was curious about the filter characteristics because it seems to me that filters are extremely integral to a particular sound. Also, I have a 2-spring reverb unit (without filter stages) and since I usually put a guitar EQ in the ...

Great photos! I wish I had that unit... It looks like a high quality piece of kit. Yes Mike that explains it perfectly. Just a couple more questions if you don't mind: do you use the tone controls and how do they affect your music, how many orders of passive filter are there for bass and treble stag...

Hi Mike Nice find! That's a cool-looking unit. I trust that this is an excellent unit for dub purposes. Can you tell us how many springs this device uses, and the dimensions of the springs? Also, do the 'bass'/'treble' filters come before or after the springs? Is there an actual amplification buffer...

http://mysite.du.edu/~etuttle/electron/elect39.htm For delays in the millisecond range, between the ranges where recording or wave propagation are convenient, the Bucket-Brigade Device (BBD) may be useful. This is an NMOS or PMOS VLSI (very-large-scale integration) device that is essentially an anal...

:D Thanks for your PM. I am very happy to send you details (please check your PMs). Forgive me if it seemed I was making assumptions about you - that wasn't the case. Simply, I was thinking about the Ebay effect and music fashions. Such as, for instance, the bloated prices for things like vintage 80...

Unfortunately if you want the exact same gear as the classic studios used, you will have to dig deep in your pockets. If on the other hand you're just after the genuine spring reverb sound and are less concerned about having the same model as the oldtime producers, then it's still possible to have i...

Dub in Anime
I've just heard an excellent dub track in the background of the classic groundbreaking anime series Cowboy Bebop. It's the episode where Ed gets electrocuted and the e-chess piece is revealed by Ed to be a data storage device. The dub is playing during this scene, which cuts away to scenes of the sp...
