Re: How can i use fader as aux.

It's also likely that what you've seen done is use of fader as feedback control for echo. Here you get the entire fader throw as a much more precise control. I found myself having to work out how to do this on digital desks as I've long-time sent echo to itself from the mixer channel's aux send outp...

Re: Binson Echorec

I used to dub with one of these (PE603T) back in the eighties. It was awesome and sounded nothing like a Space Echo. A friend ended up with it and told me a couple of years ago that it had been put in a skip in full working order back in the late nineties! He was shocked when I told him how much the...

THE ultimate P.A. sub-bass cabinet

Hi guys, been back from Rototom Sunsplash near Valencia, Spain for a couple of weeks now but still feel the need to share the experience there. It's Europe's biggest reggae festival and is a winner every year. The sound system for the main stage is always exceptional. This year however we experience...

Respect. A side note - what we're doing there is impossible on any current digital console (I've tried on a hell of a lot of them). Sure you can sit there on your own and program it all, in fact I could have done most of what we did there in Logic 9 as that was the playback source. But the mix took ...

Hey, liking it. Like the integration via the analogue route too (real knobs). Too much point and click dubbing going on these days for my tastes. Pretty much anything that makes a distinctive sound can be used in dub and so it should be!

The track is "My Man' by Emilyah & the Mighty Z Allstars.

Mixing on my Midas Venice F32 which I love!

Skank sound recommendations

Dampen the strings using your fingering hand NOT the hand holding your plectrum. Play only the top four strings. Use a wah pedal (a Dunlop Cry Baby model is ideal) and have it set mostly static in a position that favours hi-mid frequencies around the 2Khz region. Cut low & low mid frequencies on you...

Hey Franz If you're on a budget then KRK's are a great compromise between sound and cost. I've been usung a pair of passive 8" ones for the last 15 years and they're still going strong. Newer active models have a good 'weight' to the sound for their price. Excellent for dub mixes as the low end seem...

Grounding loop hum in studio

If the problem is an earthing potential difference then ensuring all of your equipment is grounded and to the same point should stop the hum. As Interruptor said, midi is opto-isolated so shouldn't be able to create an electrical connection between two devices either with different, or similar, grou...

Hey Zutao, you need more echo on that last statement mate. A nice little triplet groove would spice up your words nicely! (and a big splash of spring reverb on the last two words.)

Did Tubbys use a parametric EQ?

Might be worth mentioning that you can get a just as interesting but quite different sounding sweep effect by cutting the EQ gain control by 12-18 dB instead of boosting it. You'll need to compensate for overall channel level change too regardless of whether you boost or cut otherwise your mix'll go...

Bass drum mic.

Actually I never tried an SM58. It's a good all round mic so I see no reason why it couldn't be used. Like I said, a lot depends on the drum, positioning etc. I'll bet lots of people have tried one and got good results. I'll also bet that lots of people have had poor results too, such is the nature ...

Bass drum mic.

Shure Beta 52 works well. For live I use combination of Shure SM91 & B52, this is a pretty excellent combination if you have the luxury of 2 channels for the one instrument. It is also fairly standard in high-end professional live sound. Other mics to recommend: Sennheiser e902 Beyer M88 (original n...

Link updated to reflect the more recent 90 minute version of the documentary. Also I changed what is linked to - now it's the introductory page from which a link to the actual iPlayer programme is made. This page; http://iplayerhelp.external.bbc.co.uk/help/outside_the_uk/ - suggests that if you can ...

I'll try to find an alternative link for it. Also, there is an extended edition (with an additional half an hour) of this programme due to be broadcast on Saturday 14th May 21.00 - 22.30 GMT. I'll update the previous link when it becomes available.

BBC documentary on dub production

A very interesting BBC radio documentary marking the 30th anniversary of Bob Marley's death. Contains a lot of history of reggae, dub & production techniques: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0116k9w May not be available for long so listen while you can! I wasn't too sure if this was the best forum ...
