I also want to mention that if you use a decent echo and a board that has a sub group bus section, you can turn the group the echo is on, on itself to feedback. This way the higher you turn up the bus volume , the more the echo feedsback.

If you dont have enough sends, try this if your desk has subgroups. Send from subgroup 1/2, 3/4, 5/6 etc to an effect. Return it to a spare channel. I think you're right, there are certain elements you want centered. I always center my kick, snare and bass. I usually pan my instruments though. Sometimes just slightly, sometimes alot. Try a sample of an Oberheim DMX. I've had good luck with that kick. I've used this with a kick trigger for the drummer with good results. Filter it a little, but it sits well with real drums.

The original orchestra hit was from a Fairlight CMI and everyone sampled that afterwards. The sample was taken from a recording of Stravinskys Infernal Dance. The sample you're looking for is ORCH5.
