re-201 - more feedback & general tricks

I should add, too, that by using an input channel for a return, you can now eq and pan the return signal. Very useful tools.

re-201 - more feedback & general tricks

Well, I'm probably not articulating this well, but I don't think it's so much the shortness or longness of the delay time as much as the fact that you are boosting the decibel level of a tape delayed signal so that the tail end effects of the delay -- which would otherwise be lost in the mix -- are...

Try running the return through one of the mixing board's channels. Using the fader will give you much more control over the echoes. When the voice/instrument hits a note that you want to echo out, drop that voice/instruments fader to 0 (i.e., kill the incoming sound that's going to the re201...

I just bought a spacexpander!

Hey Neil C: I too got a space expander from ebay a while back, but have hardly gotten a chance to use it yet. I also got the original manual with mine. If you don't have one and want a copy, PM me with your address and I'll send it to you in the mail. $150 sounds like a good price. I was looking at...

Lee Perry Cow sound?

I think what Neil is referring to is something like the cow sound in Roast Fish & Cornbread, which is like a combination moo-bellow that seems to just roar up from somewhere way down deep. Dan

Lee Perry Cow sound?

I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think there's a pretty detailed description in David Katz's bio of LSP, People Are Funny Boy. Peace. Dan

What is the role of the producer in reggae?

I should add to the above that a reggae producer putting together a session would have often hired an engineer to do the recording in addition to hiring session musicians. Certain studios had particular engineers, who were often producers in their own right, with whom they were closely associated. ...

What is the role of the producer in reggae?

Often in earlier reggae, and maybe even today, too, the reggae "producer" was a bit of everything: talent scout, hustler, auditioner, sometimes composer/arranger, session manager, etc., and were often involved, sometimes even physically, in the production of the vinyl itself. I think the way it wor...

22" vs. 20" Bass Drum

HM: don't know if this is really true, but I've always been told that smaller drums (especially bass drums)have a better sound for recording than larger ones. Anyone else have any experience with different size drums? Peace. Dan

Question from the Confused: Multitrack Recording

Looter: I hear ya, man. I have nothing against analog recorders, and many analog recordings are just simply wonderful...but there's much to be said for digital when it comes to recorders. I remember when editing meant a razor blade, white gloves, wax pencil and the splicing block. For my money, you...

Question from the Confused: Multitrack Recording

Yo Mike Zee: here's another update on the hard drive recorder. The tech guy has not had any luck locating a replacement hard drive for my Akai. DR8 (I took it in June 6) and I just got tired of waiting to record again. So, he's going to buy the unit off me to use for parts (for more tha...

Question from the Confused: Multitrack Recording

Mike Zee: thanks for the sympathy! Yeah, I don't know what I'll do. I've thought about just buying another unit on ebay, but that's where I got this one, and what's to say the next one I get just won't wind up with the same problem? I think your idea about maybe bypassing the internal HD altogether...

Question from the Confused: Multitrack Recording

Mike Zee: took unit in yesterday for repair. The tech guy said it's probably a hard drive problem, and it may need to be replaced. Now, here's where it gets interesting. He told me that akai stuff can be a little hard to deal with in the older models because apparently akai itself is always teeteri...

Question from the Confused: Multitrack Recording

Mike Zee: thanks for the kindly detailed answer. I'm sorry, I should have told you that I have a manual and that I have tried to erase and reformat and each time get a "fail" message. I don't think this augurs well. Luckily for me, the single authorized akai repair place in Pennsylvania is literall...

Question from the Confused: Multitrack Recording

Hi Mike Zee: as an update to my recording adventures: I got an Akai DR8 on ebay, and it worked well for a couple of weeks, but now I keep getting a "sys err 6" message in the LED, and it won't let me do anything. I bring this up because I notice in one of your emails in this thread that you mention...

Roland RE-101

Interruptor: thanks so much for the info! The bad news is I actually saw the unit, and it looked like it was in awful condition. Somebody must have spilled some liquid on the face years ago and there was some kind of corrosion (?) which was never cleaned-up/repaired and had spread. Long sto...

Roland RE-101

I may have a chance to get one of these through a friend of a relative. Anyone know anything about them? I've read about the -201 on this site and others, and even later models, but not the 101. Is it substantially inferior to the 201? Thanks, and peace to all. Dan

Question from the Confused: Multitrack Recording

Thanks Mike Zee. No, I won't buy anything with a minidisc. I think I will probably end up going with the stand alone digital recorder with hard drive and use an analogue mixer, effects, etc., and probably mix down to a cd recorder (something like Tascam RWU4 (I'm guessing at model name; don...
