It would seem like that, but the KORG monotrons are incredibly cheap, noisy and one-trick ponies.
The monoTRIBE is a whole different league. It's still quite cheap, but a real instrument.

My approach is hardware, Korg M-1 Very Happy
(But it can't hurt to know how to make one in a DAW too using wave-forms and effects.)
