Hmm im not sure how i feel about Lee Perry. He is pretty funny to watch (check out the vids on youtube of when Jools Holland visited him) but mainly because he gives the impression of being completely insane, and does make/produce alot of good music. On the other hand, his big ego and in your face s...

Melodica VST

I know it would be very difficult to get a half decent sounding melodica with midi, but could anyone suggest any VSTIs and effects that could give a melodica type sound?

(Ive already looked and, unsuprisingly, cant find any specific melodica VSTIs.)

Cheers

Rockers is brilliant. The best Jamaican/reggae film Im aware of! Roots Time is more focused on rastafari. Its about 2 guys driving around in a beautiful car selling records and helping a radio dj find a natural healer "Bongo Hu" for his sick girlfriend, after convincing them not to utilise "babylon...

Reguarding bass, I have found recording a standard guitar and then lowering it by an octave can give a much more organic sound than using a synth. How i do it sometimes is to keep to the E and A strings and afterwards completely cut most of the higher frequencies. It seems to me an ok substitution. ...

Box Tops - Dub Letter

Anyone fancy checking out my version of the Box Tops 'The Letter'? Its still a work in progress, but any comments, criticism, tips etc would be very nice. Ive tried to stick as closely to the original as possible, however as this is not fully finished, its somehow twice as long (i got carried away w...

This is kind of off topic, but does anyone know any other decent reggae based films other than Bablyon, Rockers, Roots Time and The Harder They Come? Rockers is my favorite! Also, Jamaican films in general are of interest to me, especially ones like Shottas, Third World Cop and Rude Boy: Jamaican Do...

I think i am beginning to understand. So a parametric EQ you set the shape of the curve, then that can be moved up and down (left/right) the frequencies but the overall shape remains intact?

Thanks for your reply. Im going to have a play around with some VSTs to try and get my head around this.

What exactly is a parametric EQ and how is it used? How is it different to a "standard" EQ which just has sliders for certain frequencies?

Is there somewhere which details the basics of how common effects work and how they can be implemented?

thank you very much for your comments. you have given me plenty to consider when working with this track. i agree that the piano doesnt sound natural. unfortunately i dont have access to a midi keyboard at this time (or even a real piano) so recording live isnt an option. the "Twang reverb" amp on GuitarRig is the best spring reverb vst ive heard (so far! Ive not checked all the ones in this thread yet). It gives a nice twang at the beginning and vibrato effect. Works very well on snare hits and guitar skanks. See a thread i made on GuitarRig here: http://www.interru...

Ive found using 4front Bass (http://www.kvraudio.com/get/602.html) VSTI, and using an EQ, boosting the lower frequencies slightly and putting most the higher frequencies right down to minimum, give a nice low smooth bass sound. Using amplifier and speaker simulation such as the 'mda combo' or Guitar...

This is a copy/paste from another thread. I think its more relevant here though! I use ableton live to create tracks using VSTIs, other than guitar, which i record straight into live.
