Just a note: I know now that the Multvox Multi Echos were not made by Roland. Multivox just made many products that were very similar to Roland's designs.

I think you're using the wrong equipment for tape delay. It would be difficult, if not impossible to use a cassette portastudio as a delay machine. If you would really like to make an echo unit from a tape machine get an old Ampex reel unit or something similar.

PS This one was literally unused & unopened. The cords n thing still had the factory ties on them. Degaussing would just improve your high-end response. I wouldnt suggest oiling the tape but do use silicone or graphite type lubricated tape when constructing replacement loops.
