Well I am trying to save some money to by an Oktava MK012 as an overhead for the drums, which should improve the sound quality greatly. But at the same time we still need one more power amp for our soundsystem, and our organ needs repairing, so it will all take time...

Well it's usually me who messes up the timing. There are some playing mistakes in there by our drummer, but actually he almost never does any mistakes. This isn't anything intended to be released. I just pushed the record button during band practice to have some material to practice dub mixing. We a...

Kunta Kinte Live Dub band

http://soundcloud.com/beatwise-and-dubhead/kunta-kinte The drums aren't properly miced, because we only use 2 mics on it, and it doesn't pick up what the drummer's doing on the rototoms very niceley, and there are some small mistakes playing the tune, but then again we rarely do 2nd takes, and this ...

I read that at least for bass a hard limiter going into a really soft warm overdrive does a pretty good job at that. The Boss LMB-3 is often recommended for that job.

Well I read more than once that they always recorded bass at red hot meters, so by that you actually get a lot of compression through tape saturation because of the clipping (its called brick wall compression, meaning compression with a ratio of 1:infinity, you can achieve this with a limiter too, i...

Ta for that info - It looks to me that the zoom r16 has pretty much all the connections you need to make decent recordings, but it doesn't have insert points, so you can't connect outboard compressors at the right level (unless, as I mentioned before, the unit hass instrument level ins). Therefore,...

Our bassist uses an active Washburn bass, plugged directly into the mixing desk. We tried the Line Out of 2 bass amps we got there, one Trace Elliott and one Laney and it didn't make a difference so we figured we wouldnt need them. On all the Soundcloud tracks you hear there is added compression on ...

But what do you think is more important for a dubby bass? an amp simlulator like the sansamp or a compressor? By the way more than 300 Euro is no option in either case.

Sansamp Bassdriver vs Compressor

Hello, we have some money left for one piece of equipment to improve our bass sound. Now we plug the bass straight into the mixing desk, without a DI Box or anything, but its an active bass, so we dont get a lot of noise from it. It runs into 2 big 18 inch Zeck cabinets. So we are not sure where to ...

Ok, I didnt have time to finish the project until now. I have replaced all the broken caps and all the electrolytics, no matter if they looked broken or not, because I assumed they were dried out. I replaced the 4 way cap with 4 single caps. I also had to replace a few resistors that were broken. I ...

My bandmates complained that the mix is too bass heavy and lacks clarity and treble. I guess I need new headphones, because mine (Sony CD750) really lack in bass, so I always boost it too much and end up with a mushy mix on regular speakers; also the drums have a lot more presence on headphones. Sti...

Live-Band take on a Lee Perry classic

http://soundcloud.com/beatwise-and-dubhead/rumble-jungle-dub Please tell me what you think, and what we could improve. Specially what you think about my EQing/Mixing skills, because I'm pretty new to this. I know our playing, specially mine on the guitar, isn't the best, but it was very late and we ...

Our biggest doubts are always our song structures, i.e. when do we change parts etc, because we don't have lyrics to follow like in a reggae track, so we often feel like we get lost in a part and dont keep it interesting enough for the listener. What would be your approach to that, if you were to co...

first try with live band dubbing

http://soundcloud.com/beatwise-and-dubhead/dub-model-new-version We are still kind of stuggling with technical limitations, we just have an 8 track mixer and a tape echo with an antique tape in it (ive ordered new ones though) we are all instrumentalists and none of us is a decent dub engineer yet, ...

your track layout

what is your track layout on your mixer? I hope it's not a big secret. I play in a live dub band, and at the moment I'm unsure if I we need the extra channel for the hi hat, but then again I wasn't succesful yet micing it so I get snare and high hat with one microphone. We use an Fostex 8 Channel Mi...

I hope the new tape will deal with the problem
