heh heh, we actually got this talk in couple other topics in dub-techniques.
shortly to say...
It takes two - tha'band and the dub-head.
The band plays good reggae, the dub-head with his toys dubs it.
Now who's playing dub here? ... he he, good question. Itsa' team ball-game
/respects,
/mz aka dr zee

Live dub is the best dub you can do...

There's a special feeling between human's, just look at the last show of LSP, with a swiss reggae band... incredible live dub mix... good cooperation with engineer and player...

Nuff respect

KoCha
www.Almighty-Dub.com

Ah right, see. How would this be accomplished then- all the musicians run there intruments thru mixer controlled by a tubby type producer figure? It sounds good in principle, but surely (unless you are PROPERLY tight) the dub would have to be made oversimple to allow the producer space to work with. Also wouldnt the guitarist be better at applying his own effects- cos hed know when there going to be applyed, if you see wat i mean, so he could play something good at the right time. Unless there was a fixed point when it was arranged for the producer to bring in the effect (delay, say)
but then that would be limiting the producers creative input.
Incidentally what toys were you envisioning?

riddimking, well, I am not sure if anybodu does this: having live band on stage performing while COMPLETELY independentd from the band tech-guy (dub-producer) is just "messing around with their 'output'... maybe? I hardly can imagin how it may work well... If the tech-guy starts simply "mess around" with band's output, especially if the band's material is not very 'stable' or(and) the producer does not know it well, then the result may be just a big and ugly mess ...heh heh
My point is, that in live-band/dub performance the dub-producer IS the band member...., so there's no difference between him and let's say guitar player.... they just have different 'instruments' ... guitar player has guitar , dub-producer has the patchbay, mixing-board and rack of effects. So everything what's going to be performed has to be "planed" in general and practiced well during rehearsals. Of course every band-member has some spase for improvisation and will vary his/her move naturally during the show... that's what the live performance is about, isn't it?...sometimes it goes great sometimes it gets scambled
And of course, guitarist (as example) can has his role in applying effects at some point, just as well as any other meber ... it's all up to the band and how do they get their act together.

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE
MZE-Electroarts

Oh, I forgot. Toys! he heh ... what toys?
The dub-toys. The whole load of gear which dub-producer can handle and put his fingers on
/mike Zee aka Dr ZEE

ah see, see...
cheers mate youv helped immensely- you have no idea.
my point was that if the roots radics record a basic track (without any drops), and then king tubby mixes it into a tune (adding the drops and effects), surely that could be done live. obviously tubby (or whoever) had the benefit of being able to listen to the track beforehand- but if the band were tight enough it definitly could be done.
perhaps a better idea is to have this done to all the 'constant' intruments- eg. drums an bass and rythm guitar,
and leave the horns, lead guitar well alone? (although delay on horns sounds sweeet...)

Adrian Sherwood does a lot of live dubbing from the desk at ON-U shows. But this is more adding fx in time, not dropping out instruments. The bands do dubwise segment but that is individual players dropping in and out of the mix.

He has some great toys...like a box that is triggered by bass drum hit (when enabled from the desk) which sends out a massive sub bass pulse.
