Dior goes Rasta...

Post by interruptor » Tue Aug 17, 2004 10:49 am

I just recently walked past a Dior Shop and saw this:

made me sort of..

I found an interresting article by Karen von Hahn on the same topic. This puts pretty exactly in words what i feel about it:

By KAREN von HAHN
published at theglobeandmail.com

Saturday, August 7, 2004
Fashion, like humour, is about timing. And the similarities don't end there. The standup comic and the fashion maven also share the hipster's winking sense of being in on the joke.

Hence the success of expensive trailer-trash looks from Prada, the entire thought process behind high-heeled sneakers and a clownish pair of oversized white plastic sunglasses my daughter purchased at Malabar costume house for $8 that pass for the latest from Gucci. On the whole, I enjoy fashion's sense of humour, but with the arrival of John Galliano's new "Rasta" collection for Dior, I am beginning to wonder whether the joke is really all that it's cracked up to be.

Galliano is notoriously outrageous. The designer -- who wears wife-beater tanks, hair extensions and Dali-esque mustaches, and stages operatic runway shows with models in geisha hairstyles wearing cancan skirts and oven mitts -- has in the past been inspired by so-unfashionable-they-are-totally-in groups such as Hasidic Jews and the homeless. It's all so wacky it's like a skit on Da Ali G Show starring the hilarious fashiony Bruno. But with this latest collection, which "borrows" from Rastafarian culture, even Galliano might finally have taken a fashion step too far.

In this month's Vanity Fair, a glossy, double-sided spread proclaims this fall's offerings from the house that once brought us the revolutionary New Look. A tanned Brazilian supermodel, improbably clad in a Dior Rasta bikini and Siberian fur hat, and leaning against a Dior Rasta snowboard (I get it, the Jamaican snowboard team, ha-ha), is clutching an inordinate amount of similarly logo-covered Dior merchandise. On the flip side, the same beauty, this time in a bra and hip-huggers, sports a heavy necklace of Dior Rasta sneakers as if they were designer reggae bling.

At dior.com, there are also Rasta handbags ($660 U.S.), high-heeled pumps ($425 U.S.) and turtlenecks ($1,090 U.S.). And all of it, from the bikini top right down to the sneakers, is spotted with the brown-on-beige Dior logo and striped with the familiar Rastafarian colours of red, gold and green.

Dior and Galliano, however, cannot be held solely responsible for watering down the elements of Rasta style. Gwen Stefani has riffed on both the musical stylings of reggae as well as the emblematic colours, often including them in her stage costumes, and now her line of handbags for Le Sportsac. Cool white skater dudes grow dreadlocks. Partiers sport T-shirts emblazoned with "No Problem" and don green, red and gold tams with fake dread attachments at sleazy beach resorts during spring break. The Jamaica Tourist Board has recast Bob Marley's spiritual anthem One Love as a campaign jingle.

Moreover, since the deaths of Marley, Peter Tosh et al., reggae music has moved from being inspirational and revolutionary to the Muzak played at grocery stores and roadhouse restaurants. The streets of Kingston's slums now ring with the aggressive, nihilist beat of the dance hall rather than songs of peace, love and liberation.

It may seem quaint in this day and age to bemoan fashion's superficiality. But Dior's flippant co-opting of Rastafarianism -- a liberation movement derived from the teachings of Marcus Garvey that is centred on the principle that white culture has not only enslaved blacks physically but psychically, by perpetuating an idea that God is white and blacks are inferior (Rastas believe that Haile Selassie, the late black Ethiopian leader, is God, or "Jah") -- is reprehensible.

In New York, where common street lingo for the Target chain of discount department stores is the cheeky "Tar-jay," Dior is referred to with a faux hip-hop accent, as in "Di-oh," a direct reflection of the fact that the label is red-hot with one key sector of the buying public: the Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown gangsta moll wannabes, whose closets are busting with Di-oh handbags and whose rides have been "pimped" in head-to-toe Di-oh bling. At Dior, this is an appeal that has been pushed aggressively by the marketing honchos, who marvel at the success of other rap-friendly brands such as Adidas and Tommy Hilfiger, who push label merchandise to rich white kids around the globe.

To Rastas, "Babylon" is not only the white political power structure of oppression, but everything that is crass and empty in our lifestyle. It's interesting to imagine what Marley and his ilk would think not only of Dior's Rasta collection, but of black culture's current heroes, whose principles can be summed up in a bumper sticker that says "he who dies with the most toys wins." In Rastafarianism, living in Babylon's false luxury is akin to living in captivity. This makes P. Diddy nothing but a slave riding in a limo decked out in diamonds.

The CEOs of Babylon, in my view, are global brands such as Dior who co-opt meaningful cultural symbols as decorative trim on belts and handbags. Even though I get the joke, it isn't funny when, in their neocolonial efforts to push their trinkets, they sully the aims of these symbols by tying them to a spiritually bereft and violent lifestyle of empty status and vulgar luxury.
kvonhahn@globeandmail.ca

Daniel, you gotta be kiddin' ... you can't take it serious.
it's been like this since the beginning of times.
today "rasta" - tomorrow "pope of rome" - aftertomorrow "santa" - and then "american indian" or "siberian eskimos" ... or what have you...
it's all just buncha "colors to design a kitch of the day"

The site is pretty cool thou ..heh heh heh :D
********

now, off topic, but I am really getting sick of this "Babylon b*Sh*t".
And people who write so called 'serious articles' about it really need to take a long long long hike and never come back.... let my people be.
Oppressor my as* !!!!! Enough already....
yeah, right...fulish me - wishful thinking.

/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE

.... let my people be. ???

Mike are these REALLY "your people"? the people you identify with ?
Dior is one of those companies selling pretty normal products at a multiple of a normal price - tricking their buyers into believing it's something special because it has a certain brand name written all over it.

Daniel, it's very simple... just like sunshine: "My People - are PEOPLE period" ... no extras there..., no color, no cultural tag, no calss, no rich no poor...no gay no straight, no conservative no liberal ... no nothing period.
you do the math... if you wish
I don't even talk here about Mr Dior . He personally is nobody to me, nor his company ..nor what ever he "creates" nor I care what he sells it for ... He can do what ever he wish, make what ever he wish and sell it for what ever he wish. You don't have to buy... you don't even have to look at it. Dior is outa' picture. BTW, it's known thing , that for what ever reason in Europe facsion designers are treated like some sort of "gods"... some high elite, while they are nothing more than justa' buncha miserable designers. Same goes to movie-makers. You go figuer.... We have the same strange thing going on here in US with movie-stars, rock-stars and football/basketball players, like everybody must know what those jorks have to say about politics, global warming and AIDS in Africa... like they know or really care shit about it .... rgggggggggg

Dior isn't a problem. He just want to sell some crap. People who are trying to make a political point out of it, writing articles, labling people around left and right - they are the problem. That's why I always say: "Shut up, and let MY PEOPLE be".
Yeah, it's true, that reggae for some (or many) people is a Political Nest .... many of them actually give no rat's ass about music, they just suck on it becuse it's a "great medium for their moldy political and (or) racial rhetoric'. And there you see: It's no reggae, if it's not about freedom for weed...., or it's no reggae, if it's not about suffaring of a black-skind people (neverming where from as long it's black)... and then it goes on and on ..., and ... yeah, if you are not a poor dude on the street who only believes in social revolution, but rather a guy in limo - you are no-black.... you're a slave. ... etc etc ...crap like that.
blah blah blah
shut up already.

but again, I've said it many times, this is not going to be changed. I really don't believe, that people will ever be able to get over it and finally at the end be able to see PEOPLE just as what they are - just PEOPLE period.

..aka Dr ZEE

/respects,

I really don't know what to say. In such a f...ed up world where greed is the creed, even people with nothing to worry about still worry about stuff like Dior's rasta collection. Who can afford it anyway. Just a few wolves in sheeps clothing or should I say sheep in wolves clothing. Maybe someone out there might be prompted to ask what the red gold and green really stands for. That would be a win.
The blood that has been shed and that unites us all. The sun that gives all life and the gold that's been stolen and the green land of Ethiopia, beginning of the world. Not to mention the green land that we are living in now and that is being bombed to oblivion as I write. I work with seed, the seed of food, the miracle of life, I bank it like bankers bank money. I send it where it can grow into food to feed 200 starving people a day. I just say this, creativity is all we've got, creativity for a better future, so what, handbag shmangbag who gives a damn anyway.
When there's no air to breath and the water all polluted and the food has run out what happens then. Somehow the money has got to be channelled where it can make a difference, at the moment it's in the hands of the greedy and self adulating. I'm white and I live with a rasta man.
We have six children between us and everyday we do our best to live a decent life amidst all the suffering. Gambling, alcohol, ganja abuse, hard drugs, status addiction, sex addiction, romance addiction, relationship addiction, co-depency, rescuers, victims. What have we created? It's time to create something new and rasta can lead the way. Haillie Selassie didn't go around in rags he dressed in royal regalia, not dirty old ragamuffin clothes. We are all royalty or have we forgotten. What am I trying to say, I don't know really, just peace to all we are one.

hmm... I've noticed that certain people seem perfectly content to wear red gold & green wristbands, chemically processed dreads and Bob Marley T-shirts but get all huffy at the mention of so-called "Babylon b*Sh*t".

Face the facts: no matter how desperately some may try to dissociate reggae from its political and ethno-cultural/racial roots (probably out of some resentment of being excluded ;) ), the fact remains that reggae and Rastafarianism was born out of rejection of Western capitalism, the system of slave labour on which it was built, and the repercussions of that system. Like it or not, reggae was made primarily BY poor black Jamaicans FOR poor black Jamaicans IN a poor black Jamaica... which also happened to be ideologically aligned with socialist Cuba at the time.

One CANNOT claim to be Rasta or even claim to understand reggae, if one does not acknowledge that there IS a Babylon. Also, no offense, but living with a Rasta doesn't automatically make you one either. Hope I didn't offend anyone too much.

Don, you can't offend anybody by recycling the same'ol spin over and over, simply because of the whole path of 'logic' and historical references is, ohhhh, too moldy and boring to tha' tooth-ache.

no matter how desperately some may try to dissociate reggae from its political and ethno-cultural/racial roots (probably out of some resentment of being excluded ;) ), the fact remains that reggae and Rastafarianism was born out of rejection of Western capitalism
...yeah, so what? Everyone knows this. Are you trying to educate somebody here in history? Oh What?
Or are you trying to say, that people, who hate socialism, racism, communism, fashism (and similar trully repressive systems) by default can not understand reggae?
I personally don't need to be 'included' into socialist party nor being accepted by any racial-self-loving-rejecting-all-others group to feel good and to feel like having "blessing" in loving, playing and producing reggae. Nor I have problems with red-gold-green nor with roots nor with history. No resentment here! But rather active rejection of 'exclusion' as base policy and mind-setting.
Knowledge of history is a good thing, speaking of which, Don, I guess, you should know that the concept of modern socialism and communism was not born in Jamaica ..nor Cuba. It was crafted in Germany, materialized in St. Petersburg and then was massively spread all over the world as a weapon against "the west". And nowdays 'the Virus' is still out there and active, but it does not mean that everyone on the planet is effected. And many of 'uneffected' or cured later after the 'mental illness' actually do play reggae, and feel just fine abut doing it.
Of course socialists and racists will never give it up and will keep claming Reggae as their property for as long as they are around.
That is the FACT, no questions .

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE

I found this extract in a metaphysical description of Biblical terms. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Babylon
Capital of Babylon empire and founded by the followers of Nimrool (II Kings 25 Isa 13:19)
Confusion or mixture, outer confusion, sense confusion, mental confusion, a chaotic condition.
There are times when we find ourselves in the confusion of sense consciousness and its thoughts are so strong that they seem to have us in complete subjugation. Such cases symbolise captivity in Babylon.
In Daniel 3”1 we read, “ the King made an image of gold. The Babylon state of consciousness worships gold and unless you accept it’s commercial customs it will put you in the fiery furnace of persecution. The Babylonians symbolise the mixed confused thought so of the material consciousness. A city is an aggregation of thoughts. The city of Babylon, of Revelation 17 and 18, signifies the aggregation of the states of mind of the people of the earth. The Kings of the earth are the ruling egos of the people of the earth, of the thoughts of people’s minds. The great harlot is the mental phase or psychic condition of the sensuality of sex. The judgement Verse 1 is that, the whole race all the people (many waters) are coming to judgement; they have to account for their thoughts and their acts. This chapter reveals a coming to judgement of sensuality and of all the conditions symbolised in the preceding chapters in Revelation by the beast and so forth.
The scarlet coloured beast is the beastly nature in man. It also represents the bodily or outer phase of the individual. The women or the psychical mental, feeling plane, must have a base of activity and body is this base of activity. Thus the women was sitting on the beast.
This ‘mystery’ women, city of Babylon Verse 5 is the mother of sensuality, confusion of mind under sense law. She represents a phase of the universal race thought. The harlot is an adulterated state of mind, symbolical of the psychical realm in its occult mystical mental phase. Scarlet and red represent like. By lack of understanding of life we have brought confusion into the race thought. Revelation 17 tells of the women on the beast who comes up out of the bottomless pit, who was, is to be, et is not. The beast comes up out of the abyss and goes to perdition that is it has no real resting place, no foundation. The abyss or bottomless pit is negation. Thus all confusion of thought and its results are really without foundation in truth; not having any reality they must pass away.

Jah bless and guide respect to all

Another metaphysical description of
Lion
Courage fearlessness initiative’s life. We must have the courage to enter fearlessly into the overcoming life and into the understanding of things. But courage alone will not do. We must have reverence of spiritual things- a devotional attitude-in order to receive spiritual inspiration. The phrase, ‘of the Tribe of Judah’ bespeaks this reverential nature attitude. Jesus Christ purified his substances and his life and lifted them up until his life became a pure stream of divine life to cleanse us. The 4th Chapter of Revelation reveals the full inner meaning of the atonement of Jesus Christ’s redeeming work on earth. If we understand it fully we shall understand the inner working of the divine principal in it’s redeeming work in our whole being. The real spiritual life in race consciousness has been disregarded put out of substance, so this lamb of God- the original pure life and substance appears to e slain in so far as the animal consciousness of man is concerned. But to our awakened and illuminated thoughts, activities and faculties it is the lion that is of the Tribe of Judah- a source of new life and substance, which we continually worship praise and love until we realize this new all conquering life more and more fully and perfectly. The Root of David has reference to the love quality in its original purity. This is needed also. We must be rooted in love. The Lions of Daniel 6 10”23 represent the savage thoughts that arise in us when we are accused wrongfully and know that we are innocent.
One Love

What's with all the hatred mon. You one hateful person with all the built up resentment and you call that rasta and you think Jah wants us to be hateful arseholes. I've seen a lot of black vain wankers out there too. It's not a colour thing or don't you get it. It was the black money hungry rap crew that suggested a Rasta Dior Collection anyway. The idiots used white models, dumbest thing I ever saw

Racism does not discriminate. No race is immune to racism, that is. And the illness is marching on. I actually have no hopes that it ever will leave people alone.

/dr. ZEE
