I know it would be very difficult to get a half decent sounding melodica with midi, but could anyone suggest any VSTIs and effects that could give a melodica type sound?

(Ive already looked and, unsuprisingly, cant find any specific melodica VSTIs.)

Indeed there currently seems to be no melodica vsti instrument on the web. (There is one mentioned at http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=2017287 but the linked website is offline now.)

However there is a melodica soundfont which can be downloaded at dubroom.org:

To play a soundfont you need to load it into a soundfont player vsti like

or
http://www.kvraudio.com/get/2617.html

I didn't try this out myself. So if you try, let us know how it worked out..

Since ive been using Reason i found there is a couple of more realistic melodica sounds on there, but getting the live feel of it and the breathing and what not is very difficult.
Do you think a midi keyboard with velocity sensitive keys would help?

I don't think so. Melodica keys are not velocity sensitive either. You would need a breath controller which is more expensive than a real melodica! A midi Keyboard with after-touch could theoretically do something similar (You can control the loudness of the tone through the force you use to press a key down after initially hitting the note). I tried that for brass and melodica sounds but it's not convincing at all.
Why don't you just get a real melodica? It won't cost more than any midi hardware and will serve you better for the purpose you are after.

I came across this discussion while I was searching for a Melodica VST. Although I have yet to make it work properly for me, there is a VST out there that supposedly emulates a harmonium and accordian/melodica. The name of the program is "Peti". If you search for it you can find a copy online to try out before you purchase it.
