melodicas all the same, get hohner BUT HOW TO PLAY?

Post by ion5 » Fri Nov 23, 2007 11:46 pm

anyone tutorials for play it dubwise?

i kinda have no idea to get out really reggae/dub sounding melodies out of it...
well i didnt learn any scales or sth like that, that may be one prob...

i can play/find sum dubwise chords by now, but getting a melodie-LINE wit melodica is sth else even tough i think the melodica melodies including the actual chord sounds of the mix but just appear together with the other notes of the melodie right?

blessed

Learning scales is a must! For Dub concentrate on learning Minor scales, but you do need them if you are going to build melodies that fit and make sense.

- don't just play the melodica like a keyboard. rather think of a singing voice and make use of the possibility to modulate the loudness of the instrument with your breath.
- the minor scales mentioned above are essential. for the typical far east style often heard on augustus pablos tracks try pentatonic scales
- mostly melodicas in dub are heard with a good dose of echo

Learn the pentatonic minor scale start practice and try to imitate by 'ear' some Pablo's song...

Best way to start...

but one reason why melodica became so popular is that pablo had taken a simple child's toy instrument, and made it beautiful. it had not been done before, and was novel and different. nowadays, putting melodica on a dub/reggae track has sadly become cliche. why not try some other instruments? get creative, instead of trying to recreate what has been done. you will be so much more satisfied. innovate, not imitate.

i mean absolutely no disrespect to pablo or anyone.

love you bye
