This is the "promised land" that i know also. Great tune originally called
Love fire, from Aswads New Chapter album. The dub version is a KILLER
(one of my favorite Aswad dubs) called Dub fire from the New Chapter of
Dub album..
The bad news is, i dont know how they got that bass sound.............. :-?

I don't know what it is but it sound very similar to the bass sound on 'The Corpse Rises' on 'Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires' released in 1981 ( I think), even the bass tune is similar.

You should be able to get close with most subtractive syths. The tone reminds me of a Korg MS-20 (there is a good software emulation).

I agree that the korg ms-20 could probably do it. This bass sound has a vocal like quality which can be created using a formant filter / vowel filter. The trick with these is that they have 2 resonance frequencies. Traditional synth filters are either low pass or highpass filters which have one resonance frequency only. The MS-20 combines a lowpass and a highpass filter in series. Each has a resonance control which allows to create vocal-like sounds when the resonance on both is enabled. Vowel changes (like in this case "O" to "U") can be achieved by modulating the cutoff frequencies of the filters.

I had a go on my ms-20 replica trying to capture that bass sound. It's not exactly on the spot I have to admit.. I guess either the ms-20 filters just don't sound the way they should for this or I wasn't lucky with my tweaking efforts.

Listen to the sound clips below. I also added a pic of the settings (no patch cables used, so I just photographed the left side of the panel).

Are you talking about the Electro Harmonix stomp box called Q-Tron?

By the way, here you can listen to the Aswad version "Love Fire".

The new album "Distant Relatives" by Nas & Damian Marley has a revamp of this tune. "Land of Promise" is quite close to the original, even incorporating vocals by D.Brown..
