Try to get in contact with SQUiD. He created dubs with fruityloops alone. Find some links to his music here:
SQUiD's posts

Can you be more specific about what you want to do to the harmonies in Cool Edit?

Arg.. i don't think cool-edit is the best for that.
Because cool edit can't do effect in real-time. But you can select the voice and select an option on the "Transform" menu... check some stuff and hear.

Try : "Transform/Delay Effect/Reverb"

KoCha

most sound editors have a simple pitch shift function or plug-in. you can use these to shift the whole voice by a few half notes up or down.

if you shift too far the voice will sound unreal (micky mouse or monster voice). in such a case you need a pitch shifter with "formant correction" which (as i know) is nothing you will get for free or cheap (logic audio gold and platinum have one).

another problem is that for creating harmonies you need to decide for each note individually how far it must be shifted in order to make sense musically (each note must fit the scale used in the song at that position)
for this task there are special programs on the market, but believe me these are still expensive..

good luck!

Daniel is making important point here. Also even if you have some good quality pitch-shift application, this would only be a basic step on the way to creating vocal harmonies/chorus. Voice Modeling is a very sophisticated process. I've read somewhere on the net a good thought about why it is so hard to achieve. The idea is, that because of people do listen, hear human voices every day (unlike other sounds, and sounds like musical instruments etc.) we are very sensitive to it and it's very easy for us to recognize 'unnatural facts' in the sound of human voice. Another words you may not notice difference between processed sound of acoustic guitar for example (unless you are pro- guitar player), but you'll hear 'unnaturalizm' of process vocal/or speach.
This is why the process of voice modeling is very demanding and turns out to be very expensive.

Here's a good place to check out, as example of hi-end voice-modeling processor, it's hardware thou...:
VoicePrismPlus TC-HELICON
btw, if you have fast connection and quicktime videoplayer you can watch pretty good videos there, and hear how it sounding , listen from producers etc.... the link is there, video examples.
There is ton of info about voice modeling/processing on the net, just search google.com for 'voice modeling' or 'vocal harmony processing' and such...

ok,

best regards, guys,

later

/Mike Zee

Voice modeling... it's the first time i heard that.

For good singer it's not util (i don't think Prince Far I need that lol)... but for me with my crapy voice.. i have try some reverb+eq+pan and you can get some good transformation of voice that make my voice better! But the VoicePrismPlus are very complete!! he most keep the vibes of the original voice... and i don't know if he do that ;-)

KoCha

KoCha, you see vocal harmony processing stands aside form other popular effects like reverb, delay, compression, eq and other 'treatments' which producers use to make any vocals (good or bad) 'better'. Like if you apply some reverb effect you still have pretty much the same sound-texture, well, non-technically speaking - it is the same voice ..just 'spacy'.
Creating "effect" of naturally sounding harmony (choir) from single voice/source is much more complicated task. It is actually modeling, because you need sort of clone the original source, plus give every part user(composer/performer)-specified pitch, plus give it some INDIVIDUAL haracter (so it sounds like not 100% the same person's voice), plus it has to have some vary 'timing' (not just fixed time shift/slide), plus it has to have it's own '3d-room-space' and audio-spectrum space. It's just way too many parameters for intelligent processing, and if you wish to have it working in REAL TIME, then you also need allots of DSP power, and hiegher quality of recording you want - more dsp power you need.

well, the hi-end technology is amazing. You know combining harmony processing with latest real-time intelligent pitch-correction units plus general procuer's creativity, nowdays, even deaf frog can sing opera ...

later,

/respects

/Mike Zee
ZDL

Wanna try something weird in FL4? Slice a vocal track and just work with the pitch and cut of the resultant slices then mix them up as if they were a guitar riff or something

If you want to thicken things up a bit it's always worth doing multiple takes and layering them up to get a good thick sound, then if you pitch shift some of the takes you can get a decent sound, as always a bit of experimentation is required to get it going good.
Hope it helps
Pat
