Does anyone know how Lee Perry generated that cow-like sound that appears on some of his work?

I can't remember off the top of my head, but I think there's a pretty detailed description in David Katz's bio of LSP, People Are Funny Boy. Peace. Dan

I think what Neil is referring to is something like the cow sound in Roast Fish & Cornbread, which is like a combination moo-bellow that seems to just roar up from somewhere way down deep. Dan

The example I am thinking of is in 'Children Crying' by the Congoes ( I can't remember which other tracks I've heard it on, but I have heard it on others).

Yes, it sounds like a mooing cow.

I'm not in any desperation to find out, I'm just curious to know.
I've been meaning to get the People Funny Boy book by David Katz, so I guess I'll find out from that (if not before on here).

Thanks for the responses.

Hi Neil,

I am just listening to the Congo's album. In fact I think the mooing sound is really from a library of animal sounds. there were such records already back in the seventies. or maybe scratch took his reel-to-reel recorder on a weekend trip to the blue mountains..

While it was thought that Perry recorded the "mooing" noises from actual cows, it was actually the baritone voice of Watty Burnett through a tin foil laced cardboard tube that produced the cow-like noises. These and other notable recording techniques helped define the Black Ark sound, as well as Lee Perry's creative legacy.
