Hi, Bill,
i've found some list, which i have no idea, mabe try to contact the person:
manual manor
*********
it's a tough one, really.... the other idea, to keep your eye on e-bay, you may get a luck actually finding there some non-working one for sale for 20bucks or so, from some person who has no idea and sellin' it as a sort of junk, and manual can be with it...

well, good luck.
If I had a situation like this , i'd go to lockal music-store, people are connected that way, and try to locate anybody in the area who may have one, and just ask the person to borrow the manual (even to offer 10 bux for it or something ), make some xrox-coppies....

The other thing, man, why on earth whould you need a manual for it? heh heh, I mean, there's nothing there you can't figure out, it's not like some modern digital hardware-recorders, where you just can not guess what order of what buttons/data-knob to push/turn to do allots of specific operetions. I had this problem with one of my akai-recorders, which had newer software-version, and I had manual for older version, so all the buttons are the same, but their functions are different and some newer operation, which I could not figure out just by try-and-see-what-happens method ...

What is it you need to know how about your mighty machine, man, ask away ...

/respects,
/Mike Zee

Tascam can maybe provide you with photocopies of the original but it seems to me they really dont care about the documentation for their older, out of production equipment. They'd rather you just buy their newest idea in home recording technology instead of using the ole' 244.

I would like to obtain scans of all the older, 80s vintage manuals for tascam gear so I can convert them to .pdf and put them online. You don't know how many times I've seen questions like this on their BBS and this one as well.

i think the email you need is: parts@tascam.com

tascam can provide you with a photocopied version of their older manuals for nominal fee. [Edit: I'm not sure if TASCAM is providing support for their discontinued models at this time. But I guess you can always try. A friend of mine said that he called the parts dept. about a belt for a cassette four track and he was told: "You're using antiques, buy a newer machine."]

you really don't need a manual for a 244. a monkey could use one, trust me. I'm a zoo keeper...it's great for getting 70's guitar sounds when you di and saturate.

The 244 uses standard tapes but of good quality. The tapes I used to use were TDK SA-90. They were pretty good. The deck runs at double speed which helps reduce noise.

I have a 244 that is in pristine condition, Ibought it in 1986 and it works as good now as it did then.

all i would like to know is how to actually record and then listen back to what i've done on a tascam portastudio 244. i was lent one from a friend yesterday and i can't seem to get any result (i don't have his phone number and won't see him until next week). i've tried setting the record function to both sync and 4 track whilst running a sm-57 into channel one, the record light falshes and the meter shows signal is getting through, but when i listen back i can't hear nothin. so i'm not 100% sure the signal is actually making it to the tape, but i have a feeling i might be doing something wrong in terms of switching to monitor mode. do i need to flick any of the switches to any particular position in order to listen back?
