drumdrops.com sells double dvd sets with multitracked drum parts in different styles. They also have two reggae sets with ca 20 full length songs on each (drums only!). one is with drummer style scott the other with horseman. price: 100$ per set

the offer looks very tempting indeed, since there was a lack of good reggae drum sample cd's up to now. these come as 24bit resolution multitracks, ready to be loaded into the sequencer program (cubase, logic,..).
it would be great if they had some example tracks to download and listen.

Daniel, this really DOES look very good. I wish they had some audio-demos. They better come out with something

The site is great and good info there etc.
I love this point on their 'tech' page:
Don't be too precious about your fader and EQ settings, some of your best moments will be the completely unbalanced bits and mistakes
...this is just soooooo true. I may even add to this, that nothing big-time great in dubbing session comes out as result of pre-planed logical thinking or pre-calculation. Well... almost nothing...I guess

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE

Look´s great, but one is forced to build tunes
on the existing "track" so to say, but it would
be very fun and educating still, to bad I have
so many other things going on, deffinately not
the time for me now, or economy, I still am not
sure I fully understand the possibilitys in this
format, (sync to sequencer etc), nothing is mentioned about the detail of "single-drums", a
very important thing, guess very limited, after
all it´s not a set being carefully sampled in
velocity-layers etc, its "tracks" like having
the 2" so to say

Ive listen to the style scott one at length...great stuff for what it is

but they are just loops at the end of it all...
do u want to use loops?

useful to be able to make quantize templates from em/rex files...also lots of single hits/fills ...but they are very familiar

its nothing u cant do with a good record collection and recycle (or similar) though...

what is truly needed is a reggae cd with great kits/hits (velocity mapped) and multisampled instruments that really hit the mark, no filler

Drum Drop just sent me a 2.30 minute long Style Scott track (in response to me asking for an audio demo) and it sounds very good to me. It's not something I could easily do with recyle and my beat programming.
Firstly, the playing is very good. Secondly the sounds are exactly right - I haven't heard any other samples that have the 70's 'sound' in the way this has.
And it's not a loop, it's a complete track with all the variances and fills you might expect from that.
It is just one example, and I don't know what the whole DVD is like in it's totality but I think I might be pulling out my credit card out again.

I only see one way to work with this:

Sit down, listen carefully, and let
the drum-tracks inspire you,........

who knows, maybe it would work :-)

by recycling I meant taking authentic loops of record and being able to manipulate them/take quantise templates...ok hard to get so many variations but still

the drumdrops are still loops, even if they give u a lot of variation

yes they do sound great...wicked to jam along to Ill bet but do you want to make songs with all the drum track just bought in...?

Im not against it on principle, some killer songs use loops, even very recog ones...

The drumdrops DVD's come in 2 types - one is short loops (+ single hits etc.) and the other is full 'songs' that split into seperate tracks in your sequencer as if you'd recorded a drum kit on to multiple tracks yourself (so you can adjust the level of individual kit elements ((+ single hits)).

Yes ,indeed, either format is a restrictive way of working, as apposed to programming your own beats, but I reckon I'd find the full song type useful. Certainly the track I've heard is very inspring -and if I jam with a decent drummer I mostly like them to start things off anyway.
You can after all isolate fills and sections and re-arrange them, and Cubase SX3's time warp feature could be really handy here.

Of course, there is no right and wrong in this debate.

If I get one of the dvd's I'll be sure to give you a report here.

Anyways for dubwize work the seperate tracks
will be a very big pleasure to work with, as
for a "study" also perhaps,.. I should start
tracking real drums after Q3 2005,.. listen
this material would be kinda "referance" one
could compare with, 2" have this side-benefit
that tape-saturation is a god-send help when
recording drums, I have to work out a usefull
methode in the digital domain to have at least
a little of the same effect taking place,....

there are couple of free loops from this disc in high quality mp3 format up at The Dubroom.
basically a couple variations on two diff beats with some extra fills.
they sound great but i had a hard time getting them to work in fruity loops as they are odd lengths like around 10 seconds.
