home made spring reverb

Post by ocoughi » Thu Feb 26, 2009 9:43 am

Hi interruptor!
I'm experimenting with olds reverb tanks from broken organs...
actually i use a compressor before the tank with a 20db pad to have enough power to get the sound in the spring; then the output of the tank goes in a tube preamp.... sounds very good! very typical tubby style sound!
but all this needs space! so I saw this kit on the net:
http://www.quasarelectronics.co.uk/smar ... module.htm
anybody knows it? i also read some forums about the PAIA spring reverb in kit but if i understood this kit limits the "boing" sound of the spring; and i want this "boing" sound so....
what do you think about it?
Respect.
Manu

Hi ocoughi..

i am also experimenting with some old springs tanks.. i use a headphone amplifier before and a cheap behringer mic100 tube preamp after the spring, with some pretty good results!

Thanks for the link, i have not heard of these kits but i am definetly willing to try the spring reverberation driver module kit.. If i understood this correcly, the spring is connected to this module and the module is between the preamp and the actual amplifier ? ? ? Or does this module include the preamp and amp needed by the spring? this would mean that you dont have the tubes in your spring reverb unit, right?

Yes, there is no tube in this unit, it includes the preamp and amp needed to transfer the sound thrue the springs, so theoricaly it's possible to plug a instrument or the aux of a mixer directly in it and the output to an amp or returning to the mixer....
i'm waiting for the mine, for the price it costs,i wonder if the sound quality is here but it's normally possible to replace cheap components by good ones....well,i hope so! we got to test to know!

Please, if possible, post your conclusions about the sound of this kit when you have tested it.. If its any good for a dub reverb i want to build me my own box with this kit.

unfortunatly, they didn't sell it anymore.... it was "out of stock" during long time, and now it's" sorry product discontinued"....
i didn't work on spring reverb since these times but i keep the paia and the foona's springa in mind for later...
for the sirens, the one from quasar was not what i was looking for in terms of sound. i find a better one : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iuj3iHNiG6k

Thanks for your reply.
I'm getting two Reverb Tanks from an organ builder.
A big and a small one and these Springs will need some power.

Do you know any one-channel headphone amps with integrated EQ?

Thanks,
Julian
