So I hear this certain sound in a lot of older roots songs. Its really hard to put into words and describe it. But here is a song with a great example of it.

Its kind of like a "wah wuh" sound.

This is much debated what the origin of that sfx is. Some say it is a Synare Synth Drum. Others say it is simply a Mu-Tron III auto filter on the toms or snares with a long attack and high resonance. Both sound close but not exact. Personally I think it is the filter because on some tracks it follows the drums too exactly.
I'm certain Scientist used this technique on Voodoo Curse album. Listen to Jacqueline, it follows the beat exact. He just used a short attack and long release. I'm also certain he put it on a guiro to get that wah sound on every track of the album.
