fizz-free fuzz bass

y'all, <BR> <BR>i'm looking for a totally fizz-free fuzz sound for my bass, but haven't really found it. i've tried fuzz boxes at guitar stores, but nothing that has that fuzz-of-indeterminate-origin/pure-electromagnetic-polar-earth tone. everything just sounds like a bass thru fuzz, with that top of distortion fizz. i've been told that you can EQ most of that away, but i was hoping there was a stand-alone unit that could accomplish this feat without sounding too inorganic. <BR> <BR>too much to ask?? <BR> <BR>right now i've got my bass running into a re-wired DOD compression pedal, that now fuzzes and compresses the sound into something truly ugly (in a good way). only problem is that i've got to run the bass thru a pre-amp or it doesn't make a peep-- the pedal needs volume. looking for a more convenient setup.
