I recently came across a Sony 320 Tapecorder. It's a 1970s vintage domestic 1/4 inch reel to reel with built in amplification and speakers. The speakers have got those retro oval speaker cones and for mastering and listening to dub it cannot be beaten. By recording at 3 3/4 IPS with the VU meters rattling the tape soaks up the bass like a sponge. Its old enough to drive the cones fairly hard without blowing anything and the old school treble n bass EQ are great for dinky, bright snares and hi hats and for making the bass fart like a whale. My advice to fellow dubheads? Save your hard earned cash. Trawl junkshops for the oldest domestic hi-fi kit you can find. Overload your tape and remember, its that rich, warm analogue character, not crisp, cold digital definition that makes healthy, wholesome dub.
