I've searched this inquiry over these boards quite a but to no avail (sorry if I've missed it somehwere)...
Is it known just what phaser King Tubby used back in his day?

Im not sure he did use a phaser. I think he just used a customised high-pass or bandpass filter manually altering it during the mix. Like how you can see Scientist using a high pass in some videos on Sideways55555 youtube channel.
(Or so I believe, but am happy to be corrected!)
