Dub

Hello, I play in a live dub band that uses a boss re-20 space echo pedal, hooked up to the snare, next to my boss me-70 guitar pedal. I do the Guitar, vocals, and dub out the snare. We are getting a mackie 16ch mixer soon.

How do I hook up the space echo to the mixer, and how do I use the sliders as the effect controller?

What are some tips for playing a show, that already has a sound guy. Do I plug everyone in my mixer, then one out to the sound guys mixer?

Do I plug in everyone to the mixer, then in to the PA, and out in to the audio interface, then in to the lap top?

Also, do I need an audio interface to record our live playing on separate tracks?

Let me know what you think

Any tips would be helpful, thanks.

I also play in a live roots dub band :D
I can only help you on your first questing though: you connect Aux Send to your Boss RE-20 input (turn direct off, there should be a button on it) and connect it's output to the input of one of the channels. Now you can use the channel's EQ to modulate the echoes. For example push the mids on your parametric EQ buy 10 or 15 db and then move the center frequency.

If you have a firewire or USB mixer you dont need an audio interface. If it's a pure analog mixer without USB or firewire you need an audio interface and if your mixer doesn't have recording outs for every channel, you need to go to the audio interface first and from the audio interface outputs to your mixer.

I cannot help you with your other questing, we also dont have a solution for that one.

Thanks for the reply! What does your set up consist of if you dont mind me asking? It is always interesting to hear how other roots/dub bands perform, though there isnt many bands like that here. Does ur band have a site I can check out?

We have drums, guitar, bass, keys, singer and dubmaster. Our dubmaster uses a Mackie Onxy 8 Channel, Roland Space Echo and some Korg Reverb and his laptop. I want to build a hardware phaser soon for him (Bi-Phase Clone).
We play everything directly into the board. Bass uses two DI boxes to split the signal and goes into the board on two separate channel and one of them is mixed really dubby/bassy and the other on with less bass but more mids and highs and that channel is mainly used to put effects on the bass (like sometimes distortion+reverb or ringmodulator+reverb or filter sounds). I play guitar into a small Fender silverface Vibrochamp but I put a Palmer PDI-09 into it (which is a DI Box that connects between amp and speaker) and from there it goes into the board.
Drums use a mic for kick and snare, keyboard goes to a DI box and then to the board.

Since it is a firewire mixer, we can hook up a computer to it and record from there.
It can record 12 tracks at once, but it can only playback in stereo and we also want to dub our recordings so we use a M-Audio Fasttrack 8R for playback, which is a rackmount usb-audiointerface with 8 inputs and 8 outputs, so we can put out 8 tracks separately into the mixer and dub them.

This setup is quite new so we dont have proper recordings yet and the ones we got I am not that proud of that I would put them on soundcloud because they are full of sloppy playing :D
but if you give me your email address i can send you some mp3s

cheers,

Reason based solution

If you have an audio schede with multiple inputs / outputs, you can both record and process signals within reason. ( i don't know if other hosts do it).
recording and processing go on two separate paths, except the gain stage, so you must fix it out or in the software.
It' not easy as a I said (need much routing out of the computer, making sub mixes with another mixer), but it's effective.
I use a 12in 10out usb audio card (edirol ua-1000), it works fine
