Techno (and mean Techno ) from traditional music perfoming point is not a performing for of musical art. Meaning you don't play techno. Actually I remember in the past in 'hot discussions about what is techno' I used to say : "If you play your tune on your keyboard - it's rather not techno, man" , and again, i mean PLAY, 'cos pressing keys on your keyboard to trigger some samples, or complex arpos or sound effects or loops isn't really playing, you know.
So to 'perfom' techno on stage would mean to get your 'machines-gear' up and start'em up.... play sequence ..heh heh, push tha'button, let it go. You can fire up your creativity to visually and maybe with your mic entertain the public, lightning, maybe some "dancers" jumping like wild beasts on stage etc etc... you can jump yourself if you are in good shape -

Now, on the other hand, if you are talking about electronic music in general, then many forms of it sure can be performed. Let's see, Pet Shop Boys - here you go; early Depeche Mode, remember them? - here you go; Jean Michele Jare - remember him? - ha!, he used to have a real huge shows with thousands of fans - here you go; hey older european guys, you must remember Didier Marouani and SPACE --heh heh - here you go...., yeah, I am going through older generation, just to mention them, because those guys actually DID PLAY their electronic music on stage. Now days... you never really know, it's a mixlure of playing-back and some performance if any.
Also nowdays, people often think of electronic music as a COMPUER-generated/produced music, which is maybe now is true in most cases, but it does not have to be.
Also, Playing back records (records/cds collection or your own recordings) on stage isn't live performance, but live DJ-ing, well, unless you heavilly believe that dj-ing is a performance, which sure is, but it's not musicians' performance

okey, later ;-)

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE
