Hello,
Great site!

Ive been thinking about getting into recording and making dub for a while now, i play guitar and recently was lent a bass. I would have to get together a drummer and perhaps a keys player. Id like to keep all the recording process analog, so my first purchase i think will be a Revox A77 7&15 ips 2 track. I will use this for final mix down and also for bouncing tracks with.
Just come armed with a few questions on processes and recomendations of equiptment.
Firstly, as far as i can see all efx added, must be done so either, while recording the instrument to the 8 track, or while mixing it down/to bounce it. In either case 'live'.
I cant work out how much dub was actually 'dubbed' over the rythem track. Is/was this an important element. In terms of analog, i can only see that by recording off small sections of eg. a guitar riff, from the 8 track to the 2 track. Then once ive bounced the original 8 track recording, record back the guitar riff on to the 2nd sterio track, this would give me more flexability in positioning and effecting small elements.
Can anyone recomend a classic good quality mixing desk, what features should i look for. I will also get an 8 track but im not sure which make, there dosent seem to many around here in England, i dont know about effects yet either.

I guess it will take mabey a few years to get fully up an running, but i feel it will be worth it.

Any answers, corrections, expereinces....on these subjects would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards.

Thanks KoCha, yes ive read a few of alephs posts, he seems to be 100% analog.
I forgot to mention one more question. In analog, how would i eg. put reverb on just a snaire drop and not effect the bass drum or hi-hat. I dont know if i could just cut in the reverb and take it out and not affect the hi-hat. Maby i would have to mike up the snaire seperatly and put it on its owne track. Or could it be done by using EQ.
Sorry im asking another question before anyone has the time to answer my first.

Best regards, Spears ;?)

Hi,
it can be done with eq if your drum is recorded in 1 track (some mixer have insert jack or you can put it after the recorder and before the mixer).. but from my own experience don't limite you with track.. use at less two track to separate snare and hh/kick. I have down all my song with 4 track and sending snare with kick and hh, but now for my last song i use all the 8 track of my recorder and after training i've got same sensation (but i continue move the fader in tempo for sending to reverb ;-) more dynamics).

You can't use an eq on the aux-send before reverb because you go trouble other track sended to reverb...

Go Dub'wise !

Jah Bless,
KoCha
www.Almighty-Dub.com

Do you know that u can record in real"over dub"
with an analog rec.
Put a paper beetween the tape and ERASE head
you will record without erasing what was recorded before(note:make a good balance you've got only one chance!)
If your drums is in 2tracks or only one you should
have a filter (bandpass 400>centerhz>1000 for snare rev,an analog one off course!!(;-))before your reverb it will be better than an eq,try with a wahwah(works sometimes) if you don't have a filter
