also depending on what do you 'view as cool leads'. If you mean some sort of ala-rock impressive solo guitar-leads, you ain't gonna find much in dub.... stuff like this isn't 'typical'.
Get yourself "AIN'T TALKIN''BOUT DUB" from apollo440's "Electro Glide In Blue" with kik-a*s Ed Van Halen's samples, from where Ed wasn't talkin''bout Love . This track isn't dub thou..., but it's looped, it's electronic/fusion and it's pretty 'dubbed -in and -out' ...heh heh

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr. ZEE

Not dub, but more reggae/jazz - Anything by Ernest Ranglin. He is a guitarist who does instrumental tracks in a reggae tinged with jazz style.

Haha, this is the problem with getting a bunch of musicians into a single unit that will play reggae. The guitarist wants to play songs fearuring guit. key players want to do tunes w/ keyboard leads, etc. But dub isn't like that. No one person is really featured. If anything, it's the rhythm section that gets the "spotlight".

Have you ever listened to Sublime? They are more a punk band that played reggae, dub, ska, etc. but they had a killer guitar player/vocalist/deejay and a rhythm section that grew up across the street from each other & could improvise with ease.

Bradley, the frontman passed away in 1996, another brilliant mind silenced by drugs. But, as with many of our favorite artists around here, the music lives on.

Why not give a listen to Black Uhuru's Brutal Dub? It's got alot of guitar leads and solo-ish bits...

a lot of sly an robbie tracks got some nice jazzy guitar lead on...but the most genius dub guitar i reckon, is when the guitarist plays properly sparse stuff, but it just fits so well- check out any tubby tune, or lee perry as well

you probably need to go to pre dub instrumental phase of early reggae and to rocksteady instrumentals for more (never a huge amount though even there) guitar work...the trojan instrum box set is a good place to start

I think that in dub music you can find some really inventive lead guitar parts. Listen to Zenzile - their guitaist is incredible with his simple, deep melodic lines. Also, many mixes by King Tubby include those great pentatonic solos (maybe "Seaview Corner Rocking" by King Tubby & The Soul Syndicate is the right example, but don't know to name them all, I'm on work right now, so I shouldn't write too much... maybe later). Try also Inner Circle and Fatman Riddim Section, some Bill Laswell albums etc.

As I've realised about lead and rhythm guitar in dub - there's no need to complicate too much with scales, melodic lines and harmonies at all - the main point is to free yourself to the wibe, to melt your melodies within the inner self of song, to become pulsating organ of band, another stream of released consciousness in collective dream of your crew - not the horny egoistic solo decoration like in many rock contexts.
