Synare Sensor DIY clone!

Check out the first "real" DIY KIT that i built.

The printed PCB says that this is named "Percussive Synthesizer Model
MPC rev1" and it is a "Synare Sensor" clone. I got the DIY Kit and the
knobs from ebay and the weird metal box from a fleamarket (the
cheapest part, only 0,50€ ).. Overall the ting cost me 55€ and i spent
about 3-4 hours on building it!

The project was great fun and is very suitable for DIY beginners like me.
Nice & easy project to build for any dubhead i think.. it can make all kind
of cool sounds, from electronic percussion to piouw piouw,to wouOw, to
spacegun / lasersounds, or even some kind of siren.. I will post some
music with this box soon, maybe if i get my hands on a camera also some
video!

Thanks to the man called SubTiel for letting me know where to get the

Wonderfull! both box and soldering....good job! hundreds miles much beautifull as the other we were talking about in the other thread....
where did you put the piezo trigger? below the top of the box i suppose?
no ground problems due to the metal box? my personal small experience teachs me that sometimes i had to isolate the pots from the metal box and sometimes no....depends....

thanks man! the knobs you provided look nice on it also! Originaly i was
planning to find a wooden box for it, but could not find the right thing. Then i
found this one and it works good cause its the perfect size and also because
the thin metal allows a great transmission of the hit to the piezo trigger,
when i spank on top of the box. Your unit looks great also, looks like a real
dubbox- mine dont even look like a drumsynth or synare!!! Moreover it looks
like a box where someone would put his herbs and bluntpapers

what about your other box? didnt you say you have built two of them kits?
maybe you have some more pics to post?

Yes Manu, thank you also! Yes the trigger is right below the top of the
box.

about the soldering, its not as nice as it seems, but you cant see all of it,
because it happened on the other side of the pcb! but it was ok for the
first pcb i ever did, and in the end the circuit is working

I have noticed no ground problems yet, no hum or anything, but my
cousin has told me the same thing about the isolation of the pots... I will
have to do it sooner or later. But thats ok cause the pot shafts are a little
to long for the knobs anyway, so the knobs stick out a little to much imo..
this way the knobs will get closer to the box when i put something behind
the front, to isolate the pots, and it will look even better..

yep!
if you don't have ground problems now, you won't have later with it... so i don't think it's crucial to isolate the pots.

i have another question concerning this kit, what's the use of the internal blue trimmer? sensibility of the piezo trigger? if it's this, it can maybe be usefull to replace it with a pot on the faceplate...just an idea....
The kit i ordered didn't arrive today , i'm so impatient to start this project!
i already found the box for it, i hope it will feet inside.

Yes this trimmer is for the sensibility! Good idea about the mod!

Thank you Yiannis and yes, I've built 2 of them but I havent got a box for the other one yet.
Also, I'm thinking of adding a jack input as a second trigger (in wich case the sensitivity mod would be a good idea) and a switch to toggle between the jack and the piezzo...
Havent got any problems with the metal top of my box and the pots by the way.

They are sold by an American and I dont remember how long it took exactly but I do rebember thinking that it was a very fast delivery (with both kits)

Yes I have seen the site and I love to see the the things people have built with dem kits!
But... (next to the fact that most of the things there are a bit more tricky to built than the mpc kit) Do I understand the site correctly that you can only order pcb's without metal plated holes? So you have to solder both sides of the pcb?

I can solder a bit I think but that I dont know

Dub specialist, my kit arrived yesterday at home, so it took 10 days from US to France...

Subtiel, you'r right, you have to solder both sides on the bareilles's pcb.
With the adapted material it should'nt be a problem i think....well..i think...

I 'll compare today the kit we ordered and bareilles shematics to see if values of components are diferents. Bareillle wrote that the two 1M pots can be 2M for a larger control. they speak about a "bass" mod too. changing just a resistance gives more bass when pitch is down... i'll check that...

here is my version of the same kit...
sounds well! remember the 80's japanese cartoons like albator and captain flame lazer shots... also the Pacman sounds are here...great toy! and of course Sly dumbar's sounds!



the piezzo is on the top part, near the volume. Sensibility is a pot on the back, Pitch is the central arrow pot....
i added a trigger input too, works well with the sequencer.

Do I understand correctly that you've added a second input without a switch to toggle between them? that works good?

I think it would be nice to be able to hit the thing while its beeing sequenced but i thought it would be nice to be able to turn the piezzo off in some situations. If it works ok without any switch i don't think i'm gonna add it for now as i dont have any switches at the moment and it wouldn't be an option I would use very often

Great box Manu! The on/off switch is real cool and the chicken-head-style
knob looks fantastic, never seen one like that before.I like your design
and how you put the knobs all over it! Solid Worx.

I want to add the trigger input and the sens mod also. What kind of pot
did you use for the sensi one?

Yep, the trigger sensi is the same value as the original blue trimmer: 50K linear.
For the trigger input, no switch, a mono jack embase with 3 legs is between the pcb and the piezzo. when jack is plugged, it cuts the signal from the piezzo.
