Some feedback needed: 6 piece dub/reggae band - new mix

Post by echoplex » Mon Jan 14, 2008 3:17 pm

Hello all~

First off thanks to all on this board for providing such lovely productions, advice and good vibes!
This is one of hte best sites the net has to offer.

My name is Clint, Im the dubmaster in a 6 piece dub reggae group called Coyaba.
We have been recording over the last few months and Im just now starting to mix it down and dub it up.
I recently finished a mix and would love some quality opinions and advice.
Any feedback is appreciated!

That's a good sounding recording with a solid rhythm section and some tasteful delay effects. I think you can get even bolder with your effects usage.
Things you may try out:
- As the bass has a very dark sound you might give it some overtones on selected sections of the tune by filter tweaking or with a distortion unit. (patch distorted version of the bass signal to another mixer channel, then add to the mix whenever wanted)
- The overall mix is almost dry (especially the drums). So everything seems to happen very close to the speakers. You could add a big reverb to selected sounds to add space to your mix.
- Some disrespectful cut-in and -out action on the vocal track (with echoes of course) might be fun too.

Just some ideas for a start..

Aight, have fun.. :boombox:
Regarding the dry sound: A very short reverb (early reflections) on the drums can help too.

well recorded
soundz real
Tell i bout ya studio?????
nice instruments
good muscians
a guitar would a cool addition
your dub FX are out there
i like it
:D
to improve the mix try this as a general guide
if you all ready did it, tweek it likkle 1more time
ok
check diss
Solo the bass and kik
Bass... try likkle eq boost bout 120k and pull 150k way down
Kik ....Pull 120k way down then a likkle boost at 150k also at 1k
now level dem vibes so you can clearly hear both and they gotta sound totaly wicked
the kik must support de bass wid definition to maintain a solid gruve
ok
set all other levels from there
bring up Vox and Snr next
dont let the snr and vox compete
Snr ... pull all bass below 150 dial up a good vibe for the Snr bout 1K
Vox ... pull the vox down at 1k and maybe a likkel boost about 2k
hatz levels are crucial and controle feel
keep dem just below vox, hornz, snr and bass
Make dem bubble pon top a de skanks
:-)
bubbles and skanks next
pull all bass from 150k down
8-)
you may hafe automate som faders to keep the grove working

hope this helpz
it soundz good so far
keep doing what ya doing
when it soundz good it sound good
Ears hafe rule
forward ever
irey guidance
