Box Tops - Dub Letter

Post by Klaus5 » Sun Jan 25, 2009 10:35 pm

Anyone fancy checking out my version of the Box Tops 'The Letter'? Its still a work in progress, but any comments, criticism, tips etc would be very nice.

Ive tried to stick as closely to the original as possible, however as this is not fully finished, its somehow twice as long (i got carried away when dubbing!) and doesnt yet have the higher verse at the end or aeroplane noises.

Its done in Ableton Live, all VSTIs other than the guitar. I set the riddim out then recoreded a dub then touched it up in the sequencer. I used guitar and bass tabs to help me input the midi accurately.

The rythm guitar sounds a bit out of time in retrospect..

What would be super amazing is to find an accapella of the original to have at the beginning, just the first few lines then abrupt cut and echo. (the vocal melody is played on guitar currently). Sadly i cant find one. So any help with that would be brilliant!

Ive just realised this is only the second time ive posted a track of mine and its a remix/cover again! You can see a few of my original tunes on the muziboo site here: http://www.muziboo.com/Klaus5/music/ Though they are few and far between. I can never make a riddim I am really happy with yet.

Ps. I have tried to utilise the help interruptor gave on adding slight reverb to instruments to give them more life, I am not really happy with the niyahbinghi drums still, but I think I am slowly improving with the main drums. I like to think that i am improving anyway

Thank you for your time

Hey Klaus5 i like the idea of dubbing "the letter", but in my opinion you
stayed to close to the original.. If I would want to make a dub tune out
of this i believe it would benefit from a heavy reggae bassline...
And offcourse reggae drumming, like maybe a One Drop with the snare
and the bassdrum on the three. Also for the offbeats i would use a bubblin organ
and on every 2,4 ect the piano 'chang' and/or riddim-guitar 'tchack'..
Anywayz thats just how i would start out to make a dub tune out of this,
keep on working on your great idea

peace yiannis
