Post by Subsong » Sun Aug 23, 2009 2:14 pm

Afternoon all,

Another song has come off my little production line:

It's also on the myspace and facebook pages.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks
Mark

think you should fix the mix a little
vocals are so far and so dry (maybey little tap delay should help)
and drums are just too loud for me
but its only my opinion :)
blessin'

I think that's a beautiful song. Very nice vocals..
Those distinctly digital sounding drums may not be everybody's cup of tea. In recent years live sounding drums have gained popularity again, so some may find this sound dated. The overall sound is rather dry and clean which is probably what you are heading for. I think you could easily add some character by applying those lovely dubby echoes here and there right from the start of the track.
Also the piano sound would probably come a live far more if you added some ambience to it, maybe even detune it a bit. The way the piano is now it sounds very dry and out of the box to me (midi box, that is..)
I hope this helps :-)

I agree that is good.
Very nice vocals.

As others have said some more reverb or a little delay on some things to stop everything being dry would be something I would try.
A slow phaser on the guitar might work nicely too.

I did shy away from doing much to the vocals, there's a touch of reverb and that's it. When you get a vocalist like that to sing for you it's a precious thing. She herself has asked me to put some delay here and there though so what you hear now isn't the final version of the song by any means. It's going to be a couple of weeks though. I'm in Poland for work and I don't have my mac with me......damn.

Oh yeah, those drums are supposed to be a "classic 808" sound, which I like, but I've heard better classic 808 sounds if you know what I mean, I need to put some work into getting some better drums sounds, I'm rarely happy with them. I tend to just use the stock ultrabeat drum sounds that come with Logic 8, it might be time to get some better sounds though. Any suggestions?

I got to spend 2 nights in my own flat so I managed to do a little bit more work on this song. It's probably not there yet, but it's getting closer. I changed the drums sounds, still not 100% sure about it, but it's better than it was.

And I got Jo a little bit wet, which I'm sure she's loving.

That's a big improvement in drums and overall sound!

She's my friend's wife so I didn't really get her wet....other than in the reverb and delay sense.
