I came up with this today. My melodica playing isn't great but it's getting better.

Greetings Mark! Nice piece, hope you intend to keep working on it! I Like the
melodica, guitar riddim sounds good, bassline is real good. One thing i dont
really "feel" is the drum pattern. If it were my piece i would work on the
overall groove and try to create some "space", if you know what i mean..
But its offcourse all a matter of taste! Anywayz, this one has a nice
dubreggae/triphop crossover feeling for me!

Cheers Yiannis

Ps: glad you finally got the cds, -or should i say glad i finaly send them?
I wanted to include our latest reggae production also, but decided last
minute, not to send it, as we are still working on it.. Watchout on that
freakin custom artwork LOL you wont see that anywhere else

Drums are always the most difficult thing to get sounding right. I have a zillion drum sounds and I can never find the right one. I think just getting the right sound would go a long way to taking it where I want to go. It's just a case of experimenting I guess. The more you have to choose from the harder it is to choose.

Yes, totally agree with you. One has to know exactly what "sound" he needs
before he choose the samples, and then just try to reach that goal. Try to
find the perfect sound you are searching for for every individual song. So it
really is about a lot of experimentation to get the right feeling you are
searching for! What helped me a lot is making my own library of drum
sounds.. in there i have only my favorite sounds/samples. only the best of
the best. so whenever i need some drums i just go check out my library and
try to find the right sounds that fit together as a drum set, and support the feeling of the tune.

Peace I.

Nice!

I actually really like the drums. Becaus im so used to the classic reggae pattern, the pattern in this leaves me surprised and entertained. Its quite tripped-out and disorientating, takes you out of the comfort zone of the standard reggae drumming and i think that is good sometimes.

And i very much like the sound of the rest of the song also: rough an tough! I can not tell what is samples and what is recorded, is it just the drums that you didnt record?

Can anyone reccomend any places to get free drum samples? I am currently using soetimes Reason session drum and sometimes the built in Ableton Live drums. What im really struggling with most is to find/create a very percussive clinky closed high hat that still has a bit of a ring to it, like black ark drum sound. Thanks

I think I used a kit from Native Instruments Battery 3 on that one, I'd have go back into it but I'm in Hungary at the moment and my mac is back home. I play bass, guitar and melodica and program anything else you hear, I don't use samples at all.

Thanks for your comments. I need to get to work on this and get one of my vocal collaberators involved.

Yeah, my webspace was filling up so I pulled some files fairly randomly, I guess this was one of them. I can put it back if folks are still interested. It'll have to wait until the weekend though. I'm away from home for work and I don't have my mac with me.
