Where is the future of dub going in your opinion?

(I was asked this question by Robby Macleod who is investigating about dub for his zine "i want less". I thought some of you might have a view to share about this too..)

Whereas the late eighties and early 90ties saw the rise of digital dub (mainly driven by the scene in England) with it's heavy electronic stepper beats built for the sound systems I see a lot of revivalism in recent years.
Many producers look back to the seventies and use todays superior studio technology to catch the feel of jamaican dubs from the seventies. Sure this is very tempting but I see some danger of revolving around the same old clichés for ever. I think we should also look forward and come up with new stuff.
On the other hand one has to play the music that one feels inside. If this music happens to be old-fashioned so be it.. I guess we have to find a good balance of old and new.

Dub been going back n forth since its inception. The re-use of old riddims and samples. Like a wheel - revolving but still going forward. If too many try to hold on to one era then it will become unbalanced and stall. The views expressed here are usually extremes of the wheel but if we keep the balance right n not tear apart then Dub will never stop.

One Blood.

Dub will be created from scratch as Dub, and not
as just a b-side version ;-) ,.... many techno-
heads call there stuff dub these days, but what
they make is not Dub, unlike DUBCREATOR they do
totally miss the reggae-skank and foundation, I
don´t consider them Dub-artists while Dubcreator
and Dub-Syndicate are examples to follow !

Vocal to have a bigger place, and ragga-dub to
gain territory also,.. hardcore and clean
sampler-based Dub, just likie Sizzla took the
root-skank a step further, One of my best cd´s
are the Shabba-Ranks "fancyness" remixes as
made from Augustus c. Clarks "music works
Studios" approximately 10 years ago, a studio
well known for it´s very pure and clean sound,

Also I agree with The mad Professor who did
recently claim that some more "intelligence"
should be brought into Dub, Simplicity is
buitifull but also carries the danger of being
locked in the same style, Elements from jazz
is obvious to look at, but also the folks-
department, celtic stuff, violin, do mix well

Many new artist´s is sitting with there bed-
chamber set-up trying to reach the magic of
the good old days :-) , but maybe if they
turn of the PC, and raise some studio-dub-
bands to provide some refreshing raw-tracks
as a basic for further dub-muxing, I guess it
would be more fruitfull, anyway some of my
personal dreams and visions for the future

HM

(I responded to a different discussion with this and thought it would be appropriate here as well)
I think if someone truely appreciates dub and understands its rich history then they should embrace the modern evolution of this music and see the connections between things like dub(in all forms), experimental electronic music/idm, jungle, d&B/jungle, nu-jazz, abstract hip-hop, noise and even grind/crust punk. Why alienate ourselves and put up more walls between things that essentially stem from the same subculture of revolutionary and artistic roots? Dub has always been about moving foward, pushing boundaries, and dissolving the conventions that keep people from freeing their creative energies. Dub was like Jamaican dadaism when it emerged, leaping out into cerebral realms that may have initially appeared nonsensical to many of the more conservative musicians, producers, and listeners at the time. Then they began to realize that Dub was MODERN music with almost esoteric qualities worth cherishing and supporting. Of course the classics are just that: straight WELL WICKED CLASSICS!! And I even attempt to lay down the more rootsy dub vibe in my productions from time to time. And don't get me wrong, I really dig plenty of artists who can emulate the retro-dub stylee so damn well(e.g. bands like Dry&Heavy, Twilight Circus, nuff respect). But do you think King Tubby would want us to just continue trying to mimic what he and his collegues already mastered, or do you think he would want us to take those golden influences, combine that with influences from a variety of other artistic, musical and political leanings and make music that reflects the era we happen to be in? Yuh know, music from 2003!! Future Dubwise a fi rule, SEEN!! In the now, artists like Pole are about as DUB as it gets ya'll! Soo much dub, with loads of soul! The Tubbs would be not only proud of these kinds of innovations, he would probably be right along side 'em if not leading the way! So give 'em a good hard listen cause that's where dub is today. Plenty of artists--Rhythm and Sound, Monolake, Ben Wa, Dubloner, Acroyear, Polycubist, SystemWide(and all my homies at BSI records!! what's up Ezra!), Alter Echo/Sound Secretion, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Smith and Mighty still rockin', Peace Orch., Theivery Corp., Groove Corp., Little Tempo, Audio Active, Kazufumi Kodama, etc., etc., etc. Bottom line is, with dub there should be no limits; use real instruments, use synthesizers, use sequencers, use computers, use top-of-the-line gear, use ratty old junk for gear, circuit bend old toys, thrash around in your house banging on the floors, walls, furniture, doors & dishes and record that then cut up the various noises and sequence them into dub riddims, run your mixes out of an old ghetto-blaster into an empty dumpster with a mic inside to rerecord and use as some real "trashy" reverb, i don't know, use whatever's available and combine whatever elements that sound interesting together. Dub is about being resourceful not discrediting it if you don't have a fisher-reverb space X-pander or a 30 yr old tape echo and a studio full of anolog gear on hand.
peace and unity!!
Jacob I, aka Caper1, aka Miosotis, aka Lt. Lunatico from the Helix Hub currently in Ellensburg WA, soon to be back in Mexico for a stint and then set up again in Japan.
ps-this is the best site I've ever visited about dub(props to the interrupter and your music too), I'll surely be in and out as long as it's around!!

pss--Matt Shuter and anyone else interested in artists similar to pole (with perhaps less if any dub leanings but essential nonetheless) should check out my friends from Japan who work with me from time to time on my dub projects(Bersatu, now Helix Resonator). Their names are Aoki Takamasa(Progressive Form label) and Takagi Masakatsu(DaisyWorld Discs, Cutting Edge, Carpark, etc.) each with their own respective solo projects, however in the past they were the great audio visual team known as Silicom(also on Progressive Form). For more experimental electronic music check out somafm.com out of SanFran and artists like Venetian Snares, Jake Mandell, Ziq, Kinder Atoms, Obelus, Karlheinz Stockhausen(the father), John Cage and the more obvious ones like Autechre, Squarepusher, Aphex Twin, Scanner, Plasticman, Plaid, Boards of Canada, etc...

To know what is the future of dub, you must listen to the CD's of generaldub (www.generaldub.com)

Read this :

General Dub: The Media Wars 2066-2068

Following the events of 2.2.2066 (North America disappeared in less than three minutes [www.generaldub.com]), the media has become omnipotent in the fragile new world order. Three international networks are responsible for the political, economic, and social situations of tomorrow. We are calling out to professionals in the following fields: journalists, press-attaches, reporters, animators, editors, advertising executives, editorialists…
Help us decode the information arriving from the future!
In order to understand our future, we must first understand the present media. In 2068, the key seems to be the understanding of the signification of the three I’s: Information, Infiltration, and Intoxication. Crosscheck for yourselves and outmanoeuvre this enigma.
What is General Dub?
It is a collective whose members include musicians, graphic designers, video-directors, computer scientists, and creators of all sorts who all receive information coming from the future. Most of this information arrives in the form of sound files. After having deciphered this information, they deliver it, as in the present case, in the form of an improbable resounding vision coming from a mysterious no-where. Did you know that dub has become very strange?

Dub in 2068: Definition*

Dub: n.
1. sofia,
with all DO RESPECT,
it all sounds sort of interesting and the same time extremly boring. And I say this not out of ignorance or close-mindness but rather out of knowledge and experience.
To be harsh (nothing personal): all this is nothing more than a compilation of nearly random yet extremly ambitious nonsense.

Again, I like and respect original ways of thinking - this is what makes progress going. But I have enough brains to recognize fakeness and to distinguish progressive philosophy from baseless claims and intellectual fraud.

best regard,
/Mike Zee, aka Dr. ZEE

In our society,
what is boring is forbidden, why?
because time is money?
To understand something or someone we must do an effort, and it's boring, but we have to do it.
Significations of words are changing with time.
I think Dub is gonna take another sense soon.
Something between experimentation, revolution and skizofrenia...
I know you have enough brain, open your spirit!
respect

Sonia, WOW!
that's nice.

Let me swing this way then:
My spirit is completely devoted to absolute freedom. And thus, The society, that forbids 'anything' clearly contradicts with the very base of my spirit.
Having said that, I have to remind, that my spirit is being kept by a my body, and my body yet still is landed on the ground. I am not flying in the sky. Part of the reason I can still realize this about myself is: my brain isn't completly damaged yet

/respects,
/Mike Zee

I can travel in space with my body
But I can travel in time only with my spirit
I don't know the reality of the past (I just can read about history and imagine)
I don't know the reality of the future (I can just read about science-fiction and imagine)

But the future is made of our desires
If we are a lot we can change the future changing the sense of the word "dub"

That's a part of the message of the collective "generaldub"
