I know this has been touched upon in many other threads, so feel free to merge/delete if this is thought to be repitition, althought i dont think it is.

What are the crucial reggae/dub related Documentaries and Films which are worth checking out? Ill start with a little list of the ones im aware of and hopefully people can suggest others. Im thinking specifically of Jamaican reggae from 70s/80s, but anything where the main focus is on reggae.

Documentaries

Deep Roots Music - A six part series broadcast on Channel 4 (UK) in 1982, covers the history of Jamican music. Features many interviews with important figures, lots of performances, and narrated by Mikey Dread.

Roots, Rock, Reggae: Inside the Jamaican Music Scene - 1977 1hour documentary with some amazing interviews and performances. Personal favorites being Joe Higgs accoustic solo of Theres a Reward For Me and Lee Perry in Black Ark.

Studio One Story - 2and a half hours, mostly an in depth interview with Coxsone Dodd, broken up by brief interviews with some studio 1 musicians and music accompanying album art slideshows. Released 2002 i think.

Dub Echoes - Recent documentary featuring interviews with Scientist, Lee Perry, Sly & Robbie and some other musicians and producers who make dub or are strongly influenced by it.

Aquarius - Uk documentary about the local Reggae scene. From 1976 I believe. Interviews, performances etc. (Not sure about the actual title, i think Aquarius is a series of documentaries, with just one focussed on reggae)

Films
Rockers - Amazing movie packed full of awesome reggae, starring the stars of the day. Horsemouth, Dirty Harry, Gregory Isaacs, Jack Ruby, Burning Spear, Jacob Miller etc

The Harder They Come - Starring Jimmy Cliff trying to get into the music business, ends up getting into all kinds of trouble..

Babylon - 1980s UK sound system movie.

Roots Time - 2006 movie about 2 rastas selling records from their car and a rasta radio station. Some lovely performances from little known artists (at least to me!) and a excellent original sountrack.

Good job Klaus5...

Now we can have all important films, docs ect in one new thread. You have
already mentioned most of them, but here are some additional that i can
think of right now..

Dub Echoes documentary that you already mentioned (just came
out on DVD)is pretty essential as it takes a really wide aproach on dub/
dub-influenzed music. From roots to steppas to DnB to Dubstep..
From L$P, to Jammy, to Sly&Robbie,to Mutabaruka, to U-Roy, to Ticklah,
to Rootz Manuva, to Kruder&Dorfmeister, to Thievery Corporation to
Kode9..

Also be sure to get the GREAT "Musically Mad DVD", wich focuses
more on the UK Soundsystem culture wich offcourse always comes with
with a big doze of Dub. With Mikey Dread,Terry Gad,Russ Disciple, Ras
Muffet,King Shiloh,Dougie Wardrop,Iration Steppas,Aba Shanti,African
Simba,Mad Prof,Joe Ariwa&Young Warrior, Marc Mostec(pre-amp
builder),Shortman(Box-builder) and many other Sounds and Soundman...
Dont waste no time, go get it, this one is very good!!

Reggae Inna Babylon or Reggae In A Babylon (1978),
begins with great "aint no sunshine" version from Jimmy Lindsay. Some
nice old Aswad and Matumbi and Steel Pulse live and rehearsal footage also.

Then there are some older stuff i have found on the net like:

Lost.In.Music.-.Deep.Into.Dub. wich is a documentary ripped from
german tv channel ZDF (1997)with the audio divided -german language
on the right, english on the left channel . With Alpha Omega, R
Disciple,Mad Professor,Asian Dub Foundation,Adrian Sherwood,Bim
Sherman,Dennis Bovell,L$P and others..

Sound Business also a documentary about Soundsystems(1980-1981).
tv rip from uk television with Jah Shaka, Mikey Dread, Rodigan, Young Lion Sound,Sir Coxsone Sound, Trinity and others.

Then there are some newer jamaican movies like One Love, Dancehall
Queen,Shottas ect but i have not seen them.

There are some more, if i remeber any i will post

Peace Yiannis

Would you know where i might find Lost in Music Deep Into Dub? I done quite a bit of searching but can only find references to a few streaming links that no longer work. I cant even find a dvd of it.

Some other Jamican films (which arent specifically about reggae): Countryman, Shottas, Rude Boy: Jamaican Don, Third World Cop.

edit:
and ive just this moment discovered a BBC doc "The Story of Jamaican Music".
A little more info and links to view online here: http://forwardever.blogspot.com/2008/07/bbcs-reggae-story-of-jamaican-music.html

Just found out about Made In Jamaica. It covers jamaica music generally but not in great depth, mainly focusses on dancehall and the violence, but has some cool performances and interviews by/with Gregory Isaacs, Third World, Bunny Wailer and Capleton and an excellent dub poet, Joseph Current who i had not heard of before.

I just found out that a vcr rip of "Lost in Music - Deep into Dub" is now on Youtube. This is the french version. So there are french overdubs and the beginning and end are missing. Great documentary anyway..
