Adat, Da38 or Direct-to-disk?

Post by munky lee » Mon Dec 30, 2002 2:34 pm

I am actually thinking at my first live show.

I'd like to play my tunes with an 8-track player, and mix them live.
I don't want to bring my computer on stage, so I'm thinking at buying a second-hand digital multitrack.

what do you think about the differences between an Adat(alesis) and a Da38(tascam)?
or maybe a Direct-to-Disk, but it's more expensive.

I know that Zion Train use an Adat, so I think it's a good stuff!

what do you think?

Adat, Da38 or Direct-to-disk?

If I ever had one or the other I could blah something on it ...., but I never had one.
In general I know that adat sure is more popular. Does it mean it IS better - good question.
As you are a heavy computer-based producer/user, I'd say you really need tomake sure to look into what/how/price(etc.) computer interface/synch options tascam and alesis offers for their machines. If I am correct Alesis took care of this aspect earlier and better than tascam, and I am not sure if da38 actually has computer-interfacing option at all (well, I don't really know for sure), you need to check it out for yourself.
here are couple quick liniks:
PCI-822 Tascam
ADAT Edit2, this alesis adat option/interface/software looks really good to me, and it looks like you really want to have it.

HardDisc-based machines are great, I have two akai DR4ds in studio, love them, but I'd say they are more for production/in-studio use, than for the road, not to mention the whole storage/organizing tracks/show-set-up issues, I mean you'll have to back-up/load you show-tracks, then store them somewhere...., it is much better to have your 'shows' (or tracks for the show) on tape(s).... much less pain for life performance, especialy if you are planing to do it again and again in the future...

well, goog luck...

/respects
/Mike Zee
ZDL - mp3 music

Adat, Da38 or Direct-to-disk?

maybe another option would be a laptop pc with a multichannel out. you can install the same harddisk software you already have for your studio pc and directly use your studioprojects on your live pc. (burn on cd-rom and transfer to the laptop)

i have some friends using tascam da88 (similar model as da38) and i heard one of them say that the sound quality of an adat is too bad for serious studio use. he is some sort of a sound guru for many people around here and i generally believe what he says. for live use adats are still very ok i assume..

cheers & happy new year to all..
daniel aka the interruptor

Daniel, from 'audiophile' point
It's not because adat sounds 'bad', but because da88 sounds GREAT...., audiophile-pros like to say about da88, that da88 output sounds 100% of what comes in. But again, this is for high-damandin in-studio recording/production. For life-performance it does not make any difference really.
Laptop on stage becomes like a pretty common thing, actually, especially in dj/club-sets. There two things to keep in mund thou... First you MUST be very well organized and know your software and get used to performing with computer. It effects style as well, may I say, laptop/desctop is not a kind of device you'll be 'dancing and jumpin around' ..heh heh
The other thing is relyability. Even best new oper.system still get freez in the middle of what ever you do, it just happens.... scarry thing to go on stage with a sucha'performer', you know...

btw, one more thing, and well, I don't mean it as an advice, it's just the way I would feel about the situation. If I'd plan to do life/stage dubbing performance, the first thing would come to mind: to get 8-track analog reel-to-reel machine, maybe couple of em, or something like 8-track plus 2-track(or 4 track) combination plus a turn-table and an ugly mixing-desk, and try to work out this setup. Some heavy-duty image of em' is just soo cool by default, you put couple of nice flashy police-sgnals on top of em', and place into spot-light

HAPPY 2003 to all dubsters and non-dubsters (as well )

/respects,
Mike Zee

also, just in case, if you're getting to the point of buying the machine, and have some cash to spend on machine/computer connction options, then before buying tascam/or alesis computer card(s) (which are cheaper), take a look at MOTU piece.
I've heard that it is much much much better and more relyable gear than spending money on alesis card/software package, as example, especially if you have good multy-track software already on your computer.
link:
MOTU Audio 2408mk3

/mz

just one special note on motu-thing. I am 'pluggin' it in here, so you just don't overlook some things, which you may think you don't care now, but later you may. It depends, but if you going to use your machine more and more, and for production as well, and maybe you will have a chance to work with other guys, other formats, different studios and setups etc....
This motu-system is much more than just computer interface card. It works pretty much with anything popular around, you can move, for example 16chls-session from two da88 to two adats, just through this box, all in synch in one path, vary connections with digital mixes... well, etc etc...., having a piece like that gives you all the freedom you may need, pretty much any computer oper-system and any most popular digital-hardware systems... - you always have an easy way to deal with it in studio.

it's expansive thou... but you may get "money back" by saving on head-ache druggs later...

/mz

hmmmmm, d108 is kind of cool machine. If you looking into hd-based machines then it is really hard to make a choice these days... too many different cool machins are available, getting cheaper etc...,
like if you are thinking of getting d-108, then you also may compare it with desk-top recorder wiht digital mixer and built-in cd-R drive (which is a real good thing for backing-up your projects/or shows, CD-Rs are cheap).
You can check it out here for example, it's about $900, free shipping(???), looks like there's some $100-rebate there..., link:
VF-160 16 Track Digital Recorder with Internal CD

as for sound quality, again, this is if you are doing 'audiophile'-test, then there's difference.
Digital recorders actually do sound different, if you pay attention, but it is also pretty much non-objective judgement. Like if I compare AkaiDR4, MarantzCD620 - cd recorder, Tascam da-30 dat machin, digidesign audiomedia-III computer audio-card ... they all sound a bit different. Tascam DA-30 sounds absolutely the best to my ear out of what I have to compare.
Again, I don't know if this is an issue for life performance at all....

/mz

Adat, Da38 or Direct-to-disk?

Post by G » Fri Oct 24, 2003 6:25 am

I use a well-hidden desktop PC with 4 outs, connected to a vintage mixing desk. I also have a digital sampler, a keyboard and a mic connected to it. I sometimes even use a CD player to send some effects that do not really need to be in sync (e.g. sirens) I've got 2 rackmount reverbs, a delay box and a guitar phaser stomp pedal in the mix.

I think Mad Prof uses a DAT, changing tapes between songs. I've seen lots of laptops also, but these are expensive.

peace&bless
i would go for adat as the most reiable, trouble free on stage. motu interfaces are great and i use them in the studio but a simple tape-mixer thing is safer than software-laptop-interface...
the less links in the chain the less chance of a breakdown.
i've seen mad prof with 2 adats and a mackie 1604 on stage years ago.
one love.
m.
