JMX ET-520 Tape Echo?

Post by Frank Carvalho » Thu Nov 14, 2002 11:28 am

Hi! Does anybody know anything about a tape echo machine of the type JMX ET-520. I seems to be build by Hagström. I bought one recently, and it sounds really, really cool.

It sounds really good and can do a couple of nice types of echoes. The controls are very similar to the Roland Space Echo. Unfortunately I have problems with the stability of mine. The tape gets stuck all the time, and it is really annoying. But 20 Euro is very cheap! Get it, and we will be two persons using this machine!

hey frank <BR>we got the same problem with our roland re-501, <BR>maybe it's the solution to degauss the heads. <BR>someone told me to oil the tape but i don't know <BR>if this causes damage to the instrument.

Ah! Thanks for replying. This is the first time anyone has tried to give me any reply. I have a degausser, so I will try degaussing. I find it interesting to hear that a Roland can do the same. It probably means it is something of a more general nature and not something related to this particular model, and that is good news in a way. Of course it's not good for anybody that the machines behave like this, but it gives me hope that I can fix it. Did degaussing fix the problem for you?

I bought a MX-312 by Multivox &#40;very similar to the Roland space echos but not made by Roland, contrary to some rumors&#41; from a guy on ebay about a year ago. What a mess it was when I got it! I found there was no fine adjustment of delay time because someone had removed the leads to the control pot and soldered a resistor in its place. Very limited delay times! But I solved that problem and that's a whole other post about lessons learned from ebay anyway.. <BR> <BR>The guy also insisted on using "studio quality" reel to reel tape from radio shack or Ampex 456 for the loops. It came loaded with a loop of the radio shack tape that would jam and wrap around the capstan. The guy offered to send me some 456 from a reel he had ordered but I don't think either of those are the proper substitute. So it was a trip to the thrift store for some old 8-tracks with healthy looking tape. <BR> <BR>"Endless loop" carts such as the 8-track are loaded with lubricated tape and work the best out of anything I've tried. No jamming problems at all.

Degaussing would just improve your high-end response. I wouldnt suggest oiling the tape but do use silicone or graphite type lubricated tape when constructing replacement loops.
