Classic dub/reggae keyboard sounds??

Post by Jeremy B » Tue Feb 04, 2003 2:29 am

I'm searching for some great keyboard 'skank' sounds that I've heard on records, but I can't seem to find any information on the internet to help me out. I'm familiar with using the classic piano, elec. piano, clav, organ sounds for chords -- layering, with FX, EQ, etc... I've tried many different combinations, but I can't seem to get close to what I'm looking for.

The sound(s) in question are somewhere between piano and clav, but I can't seem to come up with any more details to describe them. So, I've created a short MP3 with clips of the sounds I'm looking for:

http://www.users.qwest.net/~robinjeff1/ ... rds.mp3 (1.1 MB)

I'm hoping that some of the dub gurus on this board might be able to point me in the right direction, or give me suggestions for creating the sounds myself. I'm thinking that the sounds come from older digital keyboards, something like a Korg M1, or old Yamaha/Roland workstations. Perhaps it's a cheap 'electric piano' sound?

Thanks to all in advance, and here's the tracks that are included, if you're curious:

Lee Perry/Mad Professor - Techno Party (Ariwa)
Saafi Brothers - Major Problem In Australia RMX
Saafi Brothers - From 'Mystic Cigarettes' LP
Walter Ego - We're High (On Dubmission UK)

(I've also heard Alpha & Omega and Mad Professor use the exact sounds I'm looking for, but neither of their websites list the keyboards they use. )

Cheers,
Jeremy

Jeremy,
first of it's not really about the instrument itself, but the "mad box" you send the chords through, and well of course 'right' eq-treatment You really can get the sound out of most piano/clav patches of most digital sample-play back synthesizer.
If you really need details from a guy who did it maybe millions times in hundreds variations , just do this: go to Dubcreator's mp3-page and e-mail him, tell him Interruptor's B-Bord sent You . Ask him exactly what synth and effect(s) he using. Looks like he took all his dubs off the page, but three... , but play the first track there "Ten Plagues - feat Lyrical Benjie" - you can't miss it, heh heh
Link: Dubcreator mp3 Page
to contact him click "contact" link on top of the page there, it's like e-mail contact form, just make sure you enter your e-mail, so he can write you back.
Or visit his DC Site, there's also e-mail there under INFO-top/tub, he also has his studio-info as well there.

/respects,
/Mike Zee

It's just a piano skank whit a phaser on. The first sound was a phased piano with a bit of delay.

good luck!

/David Prophet

David, don't say "phaser", say "mad box" ..heh heh
btw, here i've found a fun page to look at on of these 'boxes': RPH10,
there you can also see the inside of it

/later,
respects
/M zee

Perhaps the sound you want is a piano with skank
in the same "mad box".
Try to syncronise your lfo with your song
:you won't "hear your phaser change" and just get an hundred colors for your piano/skank when you change sweep knob , depth knob or the different syncro lfo rate.
Same thing with resonnant filter....
Of course it's impossible if your songs were not made with tempo indications...

he mad prof tune is not a synth. It´s a phased guitar played by black steel. Mad profs band (robotiks) used to have a korgM1 for piano sounds played by Victor Cross. He died almost 2 years ago in a terrible car accident in France. The phaser Mad prof uses is built by himself. So no rph10 or MXR or the green boss pedal. However the green boss phaser is one of the best i think.

the 2nd samples saafi bros.. is just an analog synth(or virtual analog) and playing with the cuttoff freq.

But for a good piano... mmm well almost any synth can produce a good pianosound when EQed well.

DC

Classic dub/reggae keyboard sounds??

Thanks to everyone for the responses and suggestions -- I didn't expect such a quick response, or I would have checked back sooner!

I'm curious to hear any more suggestions for good piano/keyboard sounds, perhaps some specific keyboards and patches that work especially well. Does anyone have a favorite keyboard preset that they start with when laying down piano chords?

I have a Kurzweil K2500 and a loaded EMU sampler with quite a few good piano programs, but most of those sounds are trying for absolute realism. I'm thinking that many of the dub piano sounds I've liked have started from a lower-quality keyboard, something from before the 16-bit/44.1kHz standard was in place for synths. Perhaps old Kawai/Korg/Roland/Yamaha workstations with 12-bit/22.05 samples, or other synths that couldn't quite accurately reproduce piano.

It's quite possible that the sound I'm looking for is mostly created by EQ and effects, but I'm curious to see what else I can find out. I think the original patch might sound somewhat 'plinky' or metallic, and then have EQ and phaser over the top. The whole goal for me is to have the skank chords sound unlike any known keyboard sound -- I'd love to have the chords sound similar to piano/epiano/clav, but more vague, not so recognizable.

The chords on the Saafi Brothers tracks are probably the closest to the sound I'd like to achieve. I can hear the guitar in the Mad P. track, and the Walter Ego song has a definitely recognizable piano sound, it's just EQ'd and phasered quite well.

Thanks again, and hope to hear some more great suggestions....

JB

JB, if i'm correct, K2500 is pretty much advanced sampler as well, I don't know which EMU sampler you have, also I never used neither obobe, so can't give you any specifics, I use akais3000xl. The poin is, that you actually can create the sound on your sampler, using a very basic piano samples, you must be able to edit envelope and filter to actually get the sound texture and feel you are after. It's not that easy, you realy have to work on it allot and know your machine well. There are allots to it. Skank is pretty complex sound, actually. Different notes within the chord can also have different velocity, which in advanced sample-program may mean, that the sound either comes from actually different samples or different filter/attack/decay/and even effects if your sampler has effects on-board (like rev) - depending on velocity (or how hard you play the note on the keyboard) - so three/four or what ever notes create that skank complex sound. The other issue here is actually timing (are all note playing perfectly at the same time (which never the case in real playing, but can be achived with sequencer if you wish) or there is there a millisec(s) differences, and also the actuall length of the notes, and then again it all relates to how actually your sampl/program is set - how soon the sound actually plays in its hieghest Vol, how long the sound ramains after you stop playing the note (note-off) and how soon and how fast it goes completely to silence after note-off and what eq/filter it goes through at the vary componets of the envelope - well, you see - all this stuff is in your hands if you have advanced sampler - it's a real pain in a as* to do thou... But, man,if you are so picky - you just gotta go that way. I don't think you will ever get complete satisfaction if you just going to search throu sample-libraries of shopping for different key-boards untill you find the "right" ready to use/play sample for all your specific productions, it's just never works that way - you always have to do something to fit any sample into the whole mix, another words, you may find instrument/sample which sounds great alone, but when you use it within the rest of you instrument/mix you often do not get the result you'd expect from it.
***********
as for keyboard/sample-playback synth - I use roland JV-1080 allot, but, man, if you just get it and expect to just play it from the box and get something good - it would be a very silly idea. The way it works for me - you need to edit patches, like JV lets you to use up to 4 different wave-forms from ROM (the basic ROM got some useful pianos, guitars, clavs etc, but you actually can get yourself an exp-board, which has a ton of all sorts of pianos - piano-board) and lay-them-into a patch with the whole load of editable parameters for each form and for the whole patch including effects. You spend some time, then save the whole load of your fav piano-patches or what ever, well, again, it's pretty much the same pain in a neck as with sampler.

****
/respects,
/Mike Zee

Classic Keyboards ---
If you wanna hear the new school, you should check out music by POLe from germany.

Some of the most used instruments in classic reggae are from the Hohner D6 Clavinet, the Hammond B3 and the Wurlitzer. Hammond is that distinctive organ sound. Clavinet is that short funky sound you hear on B. Marley 'pimpers paradise' and countless other tracks.

As people have pointed out, if you run them through a slow phaser their sound will change with each skank, and also sound a little more Guitar-like.

Myself, I got a bunch of old analog and digital synths, but these days i use Reason the most. Load a Wurly or Clavinet or Hammond multisample into your sample and play staccato chords. In your mixer, set up a phaser on one aux, a short reverb on another, and a delay followed by a bandpass filter on a third.

All those who have reason should check out Mad Professor's Viking Dub, a complete dub track done in reason. download from www.propellerheads.de
