Sorry Sos, I don't have any recordings.

Scratch is playing here in the next month, any ideas on what to expect? I hope he has a big band and just plays nice roots reggae. Which seems quite unlikely.

Musically, I'm not sure how much I'm going to enjoy it; I don't think it would compare to his actual studio recordings if you know what I mean.

Still, I've got to go, I don't know if I'll get the chance again, he's one of the people I admire most in the history of humanity so I better not miss this opportunity.

I have seen the same show, in copenhagen a few
years back, Mad P did not tweak much if any at
all, perry is VERY wierd, often use half an hour
or more throwing dirt at people he hate, he call
them "vampires", (Chris Blackwell foremost), he
keept us waiting for hours untill about midnight
before he came, he´s crew could not find him a hotel fine enough, so he had used all this time
from hotel to hotel until finally they found him
a suite he could accept,.....

HM

So...you think I am wasting my €24? I don't really feel like I have a choice - I think he's a genius. If the show's shit I will storm the stage and beat the crap out of him.

Yes I,

Hmmm...

I was jus' listenin' to Perry's Arkology last night before fallin' asleep (recommended!), and a thought occurred to me: We often love the music of men such as Perry so much that we want to own not only the music but also the man. In other words, we love what he created during the seventies so much that we want him to forever remain like that. I think this, while perfectly human, is also totally unfair to the artist as a human being.

Think about it: in spite of creating (or being part of the creation of) all that fantastic music, it obvioulsy did not make him very satisfied with his life in general. He was pursuing an artistic vision (and a wonderful one it was) but at the same time, pursuing that vision didn't make his life something he could enjoy. By '79 he was driven to burn the studio, which must have represented to him so much of what went on in the 70's. He pulled the Congos from Island release, and in various ways all but demolished what he'd spent so long to build (we are very lucky that so many of the masters were preserved). In short, all the tensions that were building up resulted in a profound crisis and a breakdown in his life not only as an artist but as a person too.

I think it is very easy to lose the sight of the fact that the artists are humans first and foremost. And no matter how large a role the art plays in their life, the art that we most enjoy might not be what resulted in most balance and happiness in the artist's life. Thus, Black Ark might represent wonderful musical creation for us, but it might represent quite different bunch of feelings to Mr. Perry.

So, is it fair for us to expect him to go on representing that one period of his life, which obviously wasn't all very enjoyable for him? Or should we - instead of "storming the stage and beating the crap out of him" - be grateful for what he did and hope he is now able to enjoy his life and the fruits of his creation? In my mind the answer is very clear.

Jus' my two cents, and not meant as an attack towars anybody. Jus' something to think about.

(And yeah, bin_ez, I know you wasn't all serious about assaulting him, that line jus' got me thinkin'...)

One Love,

Rootz

I was serious.

No, you're absolutely right. Nicely written and very true. That's why I'm going to the show - because I respect the man so much - I want to see what he has to say for himself, and see how he's doing.

Have you heard any of Jamaican E.T.? I've heard "10 Commandments", and it's a good song. A lot of the stuff he has done since the Black Ark is excellent I think.

I don't think he thinks of the Black Ark era in a negative light - more than likely some aspects, but not all. I could be wrong, and I don't presume to know, but I'd imagine he has some good memories of the time.

Anyway, I'll report on the show back here to let you guys know.

Peace.
