Get a Phaser, the green boss super phaser pedal is the one.

Aside from effects...it also depends heavily on the strumming method...put your fingers in chord positions and press down slightly...practice changing chords while muting all the strings...let your picking hand do different percussive sounds...'chuck-a chuck-a' - down-up, down-up...'ching ching chong chong' - down down up up or up up down down...when you get a good riddum a gwan...then you can pressed down on the fretboard...there are actually quite a numba of variations...but they all fall under the umberella of the one-drop...also try switching the pick-up switch to different settings...

also the 'Small Stone' pedal is also amazing if you want a change from the phaser stylee...

check out

www.google.com

search for -

'reggae tablature' or 'bob marley tablature'...take it from there...chords help...but it is the strumming method that counts and give it the reggae riddum...i suggest watchin some old reggae live on video and check out their style...

here's link:
get zip here,
you get chords with lyrics of some king's songs :),
have fun,

also, just what guys are saying above, it's not much about 'chords progression', but more about how you play.

b-well,

/m z

full bar chords work best, sometimes triads
i tink some keys sound better than others (c and a flat maj, a and g minor). it is all in the strumming...listening to lots of reggay and dub will make you play better...and allow you to play with more style.
soundwise...fender amps work well and guitars w/ humbuckers in the bridge sound wicked.

on playing bass...play w/ your fingers over the upper end of the neck, roll your tone back for someting reel 'eavy n loaded wid dyna-mite...

if your trying to get that chanky sound play dead notes on the guitar by not pushing down the strings enuff so the note doesnt ring. you can do quick releasesby pushing down and lettin go as soon as the note rings. or you can do the ska type one by doing a down and up stroke you ring the first down stroke then play the dead up stroke.
phasers dont really make that sound but if you put your pick up on the guitar on the thinnest tiny sound usally at the bottom.
for chord progressions try bar chords A G D D etc

greetings

don't play all the strings, use d/g/b/e only. use hard picks and hit hard!

equipment-wise: if you can get your hands on a roland jazz-chorus, it's gonna sound nice.

Hi Ruu... if you mon can no play that guitar thing why do not try to use a sampler ?

I know you mon sed u no mess wit no digital thing but this will help u a lot and mek u mix good dub vibrations earlier than to wait until u got that guitar skank technik...

there is sampling cd on the market... some like "ROOTS REGGAE VIRTUAL BAND" by SAMPLING SOUND SYSTEM...

then choose your chord to fit with your bass line and have some imagination for the rythmic and the efx (filter, EQ, distortion, phaser, chorus, reverb, echo). With heavy practice you will get a very realistic guitar skank... better than a no good guitar player... even if the best way is still to ask someone who know how to play good...

HAve a good time learning dub music...

The "guitar ching" is simply a gtr AND the piano playing the skank at the same time.Thats why it sounds the way it does. The piano is usually mixed rather quietly,so it doesnt really sound like its even there...

The function of the rhythm guitar is usually more percussive than harmonic (ie the notes in the chord)- it ALMOST doesn't matter what notes you're playing. Try imagining that you are playing a cabasa or a shaker or something. Play around with the amount of note-ness in the chop by varying the amount of pressure you put on the strings - also try raising or lowering your strings and seeing what effect it has. For a really tight sound put a piece of rag or a sock or something in between the tailpiece and the bridge or behind the back pickup - deadens the strings really nicely but watch your intonation!! USE A WAH-WAH!! - difficult to get it just right but always hits the spot - Pete Tosh was great at this but also chech "Wah-Wah" Watson on loads of classic 70's funk & soul tracks - if you hear wah wah there's a good chance its him!!!
I agree with the other guys - it's also got a lot to do with the piano. Use a real heavy pick and play the top 3-4 strings

sounds real simple but actually kinda difficult to do really well!!!

The boss phaser is ok , the small stone is a bit better ,MXR have 2 nice phasers , the phase 9o and the better pase 100, but the Mutron Bi-Phase is the ultimate!!

hi!

i is hoping all is well with one and all.
in regards to getting that reggae sound, you can alter it a lot depending on what pick-ups you put in your guitar. the bob marley sound is two gibson p-90's, one on the neck, one on the bridgem set on a blend between the two.
it gives the most awesome, manipulatable sound. almost a hollow 'chuck-chuck' sound, but with a great tone balance.
hope this is helpful.

peace, love, unity.

ben from kudos infant.

****piano is actually the percussion, and the drums is the melody. the bass is the happy medium in between!!!! ****
well said,
Marco G, that's a good way to picture it.

actually in my mind 'bass' is 'the melody' and drumms are a sort of 'skeleton'...., but i guess you can twist it in many ways :),

respects,

/Mike Zee
