bass distortion on Garvey's Ghost

Post by Seth » Sat Mar 27, 2004 4:11 pm

Hi Folks,

Two of the tracks on Burning Spear's Garvey's Ghost 100th Anniversary have a mildly distorted bass: "Farther East of Jack" and "Reggaelation." It almost sounds like the bass is overdriving the mixer. So I'm curious, can anyone identify the distortion, and is there a way to reproduce it with an outboard effect?

Thanks,
Seth Deysher

I think you need an old analog mixer to achieve this so beautiful sound...

Perhaps an outboard effect can do, but not same... just imitation..

Jah Bless
KoCha
www.Almighty-Dub.com

Hi Seth,

Just listened to Farther East of Jack..

You may be right it could really be the input gain stage of the mixer (in that case they must have used the channel EQ to filter away the harsh high frequencies that usually appear when overdriving a mixer input stage). Another possibility would be that they have just overdriven the tape while recording the bass line (tape saturation).

I recently got quite pleasing results when i slightly distorted a played bassline using a free plugin called <A HREF="http://www.digitalfishphones.com/main.p ... ckfish" from digital fishphones

Thank you both for responding. Interruptor, you put into words what's I like so much about that bass tone: distortion without the harshness. Do you have a soundclip of your blockfish-ed bass?

The only audio program on my computer is Reason. Digital Performer (and a new Mac to run it) may be in the not too distant future. I have been eyeing a non-virtual, tube compressor for my bass rig though. . .
