DJing with dub.....

Post by Rory » Mon Apr 12, 2004 8:49 pm

I've started making some dub with cubase sx and various plugins.

I want to play it live somehow, but i can't afford all the mixing desks and stuff, and i don't have a band!!

I have decks and a mixer, and can beatmatch well etc.
Does anyone have any tips on mixing dub?
I've tried it before and it seems quite hard,
but i was thinking of buying an effects unit with delay, and adding samples and stuff.
I could also play parts of my own tracks and try and 'remix' them live. (just record parts of the track, to mix later)

so, does anyone already do this?

munky lee, I saw a pic with you on decks - do you mix dub as well as produce it?

i would appreciate any tips etc.

Rory, why not to get some cheap mixing-board. For example Eurorack UB2442FX-PRO, it's somewhat around $300 new, has 8mono/4stereo chnls, mic preamps, 4 subgroups!, even some effects builtin... not a top board, but it will make a nice mixer for dubbing as starting point, I'd say sure good enough for live-dubbing from something like 8-track recordings. Add some effects what ever you can scrap-out, you'll have enough patching channels/options with such mixer...

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE
ZEE DUB LAB

well, i'm getting a pioneer djm500 (DJ mixer)which has effects like reverb and delay

but, i spose i'll need some kinda sampler or multitrack recorder for live dubbing yeh?

i was just thinking if i'm making it myself then i might as well just play what ive made on my decks, and just mix it all in with each other?

I was thinking of using my computer, but its a desktop PC rather than a laptop so it could be tricky.
and i hate using laptops so i'm not about to go out and buy one. in fact, i dont really wana spend any more money other than buying my new mixer. so im basically just looking for tips.

Well, man, for live dubbing you basicly need your songs/tracks/programs recorded on some at least 4-8 multitrack recorder and have all the channels on your mixer available for manipulation plus you want to have as much as you can get extra channels on your mixer available for patching all your effects (delays, echos, etc and what ever you may have in addition like sirens, sounds effects and sound samples). So you need allots of chanels on your mixer (I'd say at least 16 AND! it really helps if your mixer has subgroups, so you can asign your patch effects on your mixer to subgroup and use the subgroup slider as effect send or return during the session).
The Pioneer mixer you are getting is pretty cool for djing (alsoo looks like you need pioneer players to use all its functions), but its absolutely no good for dubbing at all , also man, pioneer dj equipment is so overpriced as I can see it...grrrrrrrrrr. It looks like it is waste of money to pay for all those auto bmp, auto effects-to-bmp stuff. You simply need to learn to matching bmp by ear and learn to program and store your effects on dedicated effect processor unit(s)...less cash-waste and more professionolism .... heh heh.
But weel, if you really feel that a mixer like this will make your dj-life better, then I guess it is your tool no1 for a moment.

Now, dj-ing live from computer is becoming popular, laptop or desk... what ever, but I would not be doing it simply because of paranoid fear of unexpected freez or crash or simply error during the show...and nothing you can do. Newer computers becom more stable, but still ...man, you know.
So again, overall, I'd say for live dubbing, you need to add to your set a mulitrack recorder (I'd go for something like digital tape multitrack (alesis adat or tascam 8mm, you can buy used not so expansive nowdays. alternatives are digital haddisc recorders, but you'll have to spend time loading/backing up your programs to HD each time you have show, and HD have size limitation. The most reliable would be analog reel-to-reel multitrack , but the machins are used, heavy and need constant care...blah). Cassette multitrack recorders may be useful ...but I am not sure about 'em. Yamaha used to make 8-track minidisc recording machines. The sound of minidisc is questionable for production, but for live djing/dubbing it may work very well.

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE

rite, well i'm not really interested in the whole live dubbing thing, i basically just wanna play dub made by other people or myself (on disk).

I have got pioneer players, and can beatmatch really well, the bpm counter isnt why im going for the djm 500. basically, i just want a nice solid mixer, with some cool effects basically. it's the cheapest i can find.

i was just interested to see how people do this really, cos i saw munky lee had some decks. just wonderin if he played dub/reggae or if they were just for scratching or whatever

Rory,
hmmmmmmmmm.well, maybe we've got confused here actually live dubbing (performing band or using multitrack recording) and simply spinning dub plates/dj-ing. To spin dubs you basicly go as "regular" dj-ing, of course you can apply vary special tricks, effects and what have you while you do this. Also your PA/speakers system can be 'specificly designed' for dub/reggae show...which is a sound-system issue, where I am a not the guy to get advise from .. ;)
Also, if you feel that you may have audience which can dig/appreciate dubs/reggae or some dub-fusion type of vibes, just go for it... you have to start trying doing it, and you'll see how it goes on the floor, if you see reaction like this:

then you are doing right thing ..heh heh

Glad you dig my retro skinz. My whole idea or motivation for making them was to sort of creat 'fake feeling', that it's not crappy digital mp3s you're listening to... lol

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE
zee dub lub

yeh, well thats what i'm saying really. i dont have a band to do that with, or the equipment. but ive got into making some dubby style tracks on my PC so i thought i could kind of mimic actually dubbing with a band using decks and samples on CDs

it's just that, i've tried it before and i find it really hard to mix it, especially other people's music - the original dub like lee perry/king tubby is really dodgy to mix with.

i'm playing at glastonbury festival this year (in a cafe) , and i need to play something chilled out and mellow. i want to play some dubby stuff really.

as a alternative thought....
Let's say you've got some reggae/dub/or some chill/downtempo plates/records or CDs (if you spin CDs).... so you spin the riddms parts/segments (you may actually pre-mix/pre-produce/pre-edit some tracks and have them on CD-rs).....
Then you take these tracks on the floor , spin them while triggering and mixing in variety of samples/vocal takes, sound effects etc....... so as a result it may sort of mimic dubbing on-the-fly, well, not really, but something of this flavor for your show.
What you may need/want to have to do this thou is a sampler and midi-controller, so you can call any of your samples/sounds at any time and you have key assigned to specific samples. You may simply need some used sampler with somewhat 32Meg of RAM or so. There are some dedicated dj sampler/boxes with trigger-pads, boss makes some relativly cheap. I'd say it's better to have some hardware sampler, so you can load it, pre-programm patches/programs, map them for keyboard and you'll need some simple midi-keyboard controller (midiman, m-audio, fatar/studiologic makes some basic controllers)....
These tools are also very useful for live dj-ing of any kind, so in general, you have your two decks, mixer and bank of your own special effects, samples etc...

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE

yeh ok, good idea. i've got an oxygen 8 midi keyboard so that should do. i'll have a look on ebay for some rack samplers.

meanwhile, i think i'm just gonna mess around with effects on my mixer and play dubby stuff on my decks.

hello, i spin some dub for friends and crew in house party style and a few gigs. all of the above advice is top notch. i would just add for mixing to follow a page from selectors i like: play version. or better yet, chapter (which is stronger than version). i opened my last set with give a little love off the album by j. osbourne and then added some rewind type effects and laser beams, sound bites etc. between switching to dubwize by scientist, it kills. then you can add some reverb or effects to the dubs and bring back in the original riddem. then if you can find other songs that pick up the riddem you are off and running. you can follow some real old tunes say by like joe gibbs and althea and donna "im still in love" to new versions by sean paul, not my thing but some crowds seem to need this type of modern validation. i chase down versions and get made riddems going, looping portions with added effects, match them up to thicken up the sound, cancel some vocals as much as possible on some software and then cut in and out with my specific effects. like good riddems to rock are the gunman riddems and like shank i shek type vibes with so many versions and chapters. perhaps we can trade some effects cdrs or related implements to help in a dancehall style of dub spinning. raspect

I love to spin dub with what ever format possible whether it be vinyl, cd, laptop, mpc. At present I do the breakfast show on www.kfmradio.co.nz and we use a DJX700 from Behringer which is a copy of the pioneer and far cheaper. The echo is more suitable for dub as you can select a channel, echo and then select the next channel to effect, while the last channel is still echoing, unlike the pioneer which stops echoing when youve selected the next channel. A Mackie seems to produce a desired effect to djing - try Al Haca or Different Drummer Sound System's live sets for example.
