Anyone thought of making an instructional video?

Post by John Ellison IV » Mon Jun 07, 2004 1:22 am

I was reading a post and someone mentioned there are no instructional videos regarding dub. True, c'mon alot of you are very talented. Shit, I think Mike Zee can make a decent instructional video. Well, just a suggestion

Anyone thought of making an instructional video?

Heh, actually I was thinking about it sometime ago. But there so many (mostly technical) 'walls' on the way. To make any 'decent' video isn't an easy thing. It's relatively easier now with digi-camcorder and available video-editing software.... but still....arghhhh. I don't think it's really possible to do it all by yourself. You really at least need a camera-guy, who knows what he/she is doing.
And of course ...the biggest task is to actually HAVE A NERVE! to "teach' how to dub....man, heh heh ..lol. I am absolutely non-qualified dude for that position, no way in hell. My only thoughts were to put together some sort of 'collection of personal triks in dubbing' or something like that, just some technical situations which I happened to go through myself with the "tools" I happened to have.
Time is a big problem, actually, it's just gets tighter as it goes... I am happy if I squiz some hour to make anything in music at all. I've created couple of web-pages at my site with some simple "instructional notes"... and I thought it was a "great" did ... lol
If I ever get some 'free' time, I may put together some extra pages with 'tips' on dubbing in home studio with some actual pictures and equipment conection diagrams etc... well, maybe I can create some short downloadable video-clips as well, less likely thou....
In general, I'd agree, that having dub-instructional video available would be so cool. I mean there are thousands of guitar-playing videos...looks like every freak on the planet thinks that he can teach guitars ...hah hah
I think big "fat" boys with big dedicated dub-studios and great experience could of make a video, like Mad Professor for example...., even just something like overall tour would be great to see..., but i would not hope for that

PS, Daniels' Dub Scrolls Idea is great... where he has collected and organized a collective instructional pack , which covers well the whole dub-production field. could not think of better idea for sucha twisted area of musical art as dub

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE
zee dub lab

Could one imagine Mad P making a "do it yourself"
video,... giving away all the secrets that took
him a life-time to collect, I mean it´s nut just
another "learn how to play guitar" video, the dub
production techniques might get very intimate on
a certain level, this is not said to be rediculos
like trying to hide the use of spring´s, just to
point out a understandable factor, use some time
browsing the forums here will reveal many basics,
a cornerstone to rool your own up-on, the uncertainty will force the individual I into a
healthy procces gaining own identety as well,
so we not comes out to equal, just my two cent

HM

...giving away all the secrets that took
him a life-time to collect...

heh heh, HM, ptssss ;-), "secrets" is a VERY relative notion...., all depending on what 'stage' of your life-time you are ,
When you get somewhat deep into something, it's hard to really take your mind back , when you were just starting, sometimes you really can't even tell when it was...BUT! back then EVERY-SINGLE-THING was a "secret"... heh heh
Also, for a creative mind knovledge isn't 'cash to buy' nor a free ticket to go... it's rather a catalog of pointies on how it was done and where not to go in search of a diamond, cos' you know it was taken already.... knowledge!, you see?
*******
On the other branch of thoughts ...here: actually, just my guesss...., I would think, that IF!!!! guys like MP for some reason would like to express/share their experience, they would not do it in a form of official commercial products (video, book etc...), not because they don't want to disclose their golden "secrets", but rather because of if they try to do so - it would be very hard (if possible at all) to express it in any commonly acceptable or useful form, which would make a good solid technical sense. Well, guys, if you are/were dubbing, then you know what I am getting here at. (Hard to explain to any producer who was not into dubbing). If you try to layout a formular/or step-by-step instruction-like-form of some most exiting 'achievemnts' of yours in dubbing, you'll quit trying as soon as you start.... heh heh. It's just always soooooo specific to very specific track, part, take, note, drum-hit and a slip of a slider, which controlls only your specific set-up, that it just does not make sense to even try to apply on anything else.... not to mention, that often you yourself don't really know why exactly from technical point this or that cameout soooo cool and just right. There, actually, believing in a 'ghost in your mixing desk' starts making sense...heh heh
Another story would be a some sort general ideas and some sort of expression of IDEALS , philosophy and 'must do' and 'must have' main blocks. I would be glad to see a video of any serious dub-producer, who would simply make a general tour through studio and blah-blah overall..... keep "the secrets" for your grave.... sort of speak ,
...keep talkin'

/respects,

/mike z aka Dr ZEE
*********
p.s. HM, how're Ya. ? Kinda long time no blah. Anything exiting in your life?
I am finishing my first and only blues-based guitar instrumental album ... heh heh, nothing for dub at the moment, just playin' some music I have a link to ...sort of speak. Turning freakin' 40 in a few days... grrrrrrrrr, it's suxxxxx
later, man,
/mz

What I wan´t to stress the most, is what I said
"share the basics" ,. and develope individually
from there, it was not for being a snob, just I
realy think this procces is fruitfull in all way

Yeah long time no blah, kinda troubled life and
a teenage-daughter that drives me crazy, also I
have had to make a very painfull decission to
leave my studio facillities during the last 10
years, it did not turn out as I wanted, being
50 kilometers from town, and no longer any car,
and I realised that everytime I arrived in one
place I had forgotten something "back home" etc.
I had more time at hand, but for no use, I will
now try to work on with a reduced setup from a
little flat in copenhagen, drumset will be put
in my kid-brothers new house if possible, both
on cubase, will try work exhanging files (ADSL)
I will give it a few years more, if everything
goes better build a little sound-proff box to
praktise conga again, not trouble neighboughs

Sold a lot of gear, yesterday my 16 in/out RME-
system, what was left of the car I exchanged to
an RE-201 :-) I am right now putting things in
boxes, wierd really, but glad I took the step
considered the situation, time will tell what
happens, sometimes I do these radical changes,
this step will help ecconomy and give me time
like never before, go for some lessons in piano
and conga, go out a little more also, working
only 3 days a week at good times, posetive :-)

I wish you a nice day being 40, I will turn 39
in a mounth, you remember the book I told about,
I clean up all the clutter, mentally also, some
persons will "go" also maybe,.. my brother said
last week "then in only 20 years you are 60" :-)

These words did echo since

HM
