The Drastics - New Live Dub Group in Chicago

Post by Tom » Mon Aug 30, 2004 5:50 am

Hey Y'all,
We are a seven-piece instrumental dub group from Chicago, USA. We've been playing for six months or so doing a diverse mix of rocksteady and reggae styles with a live dub organizer, and an improvisation based sensibility. You can check out our shit at www.thedrastics.com, live MP3s, show dates, and info on our forthcoming album (sometime this fall). Drop a line and let us know whatcha think-

tom"_AT_"thedrastics.com [replace "_AT_" with @]

Nice tunes! Great rhythm section and group interaction. I feel the tuning of the brasslines could be improved somewhat. (I play sax too and know it's hard to get the tuning right in a brass section - I tried and missed many times..) An additional trumpet or trombone would help to get a fuller brass timbre.
Respect for the artwork too.. The flyer from August 5 is hanging on my office wall right now.

Thanks for the comments, y'all. The US dub scene seems to be on the rise from what I've noticed, a lot more younger bands getting into the slower music. I think also with the technology getting cheaper, it's feasible to do a lot more of this kind of shit in a live situation. We're just starting to play outside of Chicago but the response has been pretty amazing, especially considering we're playing slower tempo instrumental music.

Re: the horns, I'm one of the saxes and I have to fault ourselves on that, but it's improving, especially after working on the album over the last month. We got a couple brass players to fill in on individual tracks, but we're still looking for a brass man (preferably trombone, or even better, double on trombone/trumpet) that fits our sensiblity.

Anthony is our man for the poster designs, he's the baritone sax-man/webmaster among many other things. I'll pass along the respects.

Peace

Also, nice site. Very cool resource for everyone. Much respect

tom"_AT_"thedrastics.com [replace "_AT_" with @]

I'll try and catch for some shows, although I can't download music from here, it sounds right up my street. I'm trying to get a band together at the moment in Chicago - some kind of AfroBhangraTechnoReggae thing - so if you know any musicians who'd like to take part in something like that, let me know!

Matt
