Scratch and compression

Post by Anthony » Wed Feb 09, 2005 9:33 pm

I havnt read much about the use of compession by those eary dub pioneers. Maybe the lack of it was part of there secret. Listening to Lee Perrys stuff sound like there is either some kind of compession goin on there or his musicians and singers have great controle. Tape compression perhaps ?
Looking at the studio pic's in the Arkology booklet you can see a rack sized device sitting on top of his RE 201. Any one know what that is ?

I can't help with your specific question but I would guess that whether or not he was using compression then some would have been applied by a mastering engineer in the mastering process (away from his studio).

Amongst the many interesting things in that photo is the book of human anatomy lying open on the mixing desk.

tape compression was certainly part of the typical 70ies dub sound.

the machine on the picture could be a tape recorder.

here is a zoomed excerpt of another black arc picture where the space echo together with the device in question can be seen:

i ripped the picture from www.urbanimage.tv a fantastic source of brilliant pictures of jamaican and other artists. it's also the home of adrian boot the man who took some of the most famous pics of bob marley

must register to see pics????!!!!!!!
register my A*S - f*ck off, urbanimage.tv ..heh heh
***********
... back in pre-digital times - compression was everywhere ... say "in the air" ... also producers back then often could be 'unaware' of 'the fact(s) of applying compression', but rather were doing it naturally. In a sense, we think nowdays about compression (and other treatments during production) differently, now we have everything as 'sterile material' and ingradients of the production process are all listed in the 'on-screen menue' . In the past many things were achived 'by force of morther nature' ...sort of speak , and the ear was a judge and a guide. so, I'd say, don't ask Lee a question such as: "What compression settings did you use on your "Yada-Yada-dub"?" ...'cos you get back nothing but a 'crazy ramble' ... hah hah

speaking of Bob... couple days ago I've found an old 1976 original LP Rastaman Vibration album...in the boxes with bunch of old records... it happend to be in great shape.... I listened to it last night - sounds soooooooooooooo sweet. The re-issued (re-mastered ...yeah, right ) CDs don't sound as good at all as LP. Gotta listen to plastic more...

/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE
zee dub lab

i don't feel urban image deserve any diss at all.. these are righteous dudes trying not to get robbed of a lifetime's achievement of great photography. i registered at their site years ago and was never spammed by them. anybody who is into reggae for a few years will be surprised how many of the best known reggae photographs were taken by adrian boot.

hah, I guess I need to use these more ....lol
ahhhh, anyway... Great photography??? well, that's fine. You've made the shot - it's yours. Sure you gotta protect it. The question is thou.... photography of what ... or better yet to say "Of Who???!!!!" .... nobody would give a crap about these photos if was just for the 'art of photography' ... it's all about who is on the photo. So there.... think about it.
So what is it - great photography ... or photography of greats?

/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE

i don't know whether you actually looked at the archive but compared to the average pics you find on many reggae album covers adrian boot's work really stands out A LOT. The pic above is just a small outtake in low res. Of course this is not what i refer to when I say "great photography".
there is nothing i have to "protect"! his work stands for itself. and it's not because many of the pics feature famous faces.

Scratch and compression

Getting back to the subject, to my ears there seems to be a bit of compression going on pre mastering. ie. vocals and bass seem very regular in volume.
Another thing I'v noticed is his drummers are so tight. I'm almost wondering if the man had some tape loops happining ?

I've never heard of the use of tape loops for drums in his studio but he had some of the tightest reggae drummers playing for him: Carlton Barrett (wailers), Sly Dunbar (sly&robbie), Lloyd "Tin Leg" Adams, Lloyd Knibb, Mikey Richards (also wailers), Benbow Creary, Winston Grennan, Hugh Malcolm, Peng (see this page)

Since he used a 4-track tape on many recordings I imagine that he had to do pingpong style reduction of tracks to accomodate the vocals. This would mean that tape compression was applied more than once on part of the instruments.
