ZEE DUB LAB (as introduction)

Post by Mike Zee » Fri Oct 12, 2001 4:34 pm

Hi, guys,
since Daniel has made this cool re-organization of messages (btw: thanks , Daniel, this looks great, good idea), I thought I'd drop a note here, so if anybody wish to know what my dub project looks and sounds like.
here is the link:
ZEE DUB LAB METAL DOOR DUB

ok, a few words about what is this.
This project actually is a sort of reflection of how did I as musician got involved into dub.
ZEE DUB LAB METAL DOOR DUB is a result of mutation, sort of speak. It all started some back in around 1997 or so with album "Dr. ZEE". This album actually never was officially released as original version. And it was a fusion of electronica, down-tempo break beat, jungle. It was pretty 'crazzy' stuff. The only one track from that original album actually got out later: "ETHANOL [C2-H5-OH]", which is kraftwerk-ish electro-tune. And it has nothing to do with dub at all. Also the very original cover art for that album has become later as a part of main image/logo of ZEE DUB LAB project. Actually it is a fragment of the image, which looks like a mask (or half face mask). This is actually digitally manipulated fragment of my face , btw...

Now: later I have released two albums-compilations, which include vary down-tempo tracks produced at different times, and some dub tracks. These are "Dr. ZEE archive part 1 and part 2"
So, who is Dr. ZEE?
Well, for me it's a sort of image, artistic image of myself when I am in dub-production. You know how it is, also, speaking of misterious side of dub... So "Dr. ZEE" is a mad scientist in his lab, well, I know, it may be a sort of cliche like thing in dub world, but , that's what it is, however...he he he, I actually DO have 6 years of Med School and some practice in the past..., but I've never made a doctor career, but instead got into dance, choreography, music and art...., blah blah.
Now about 'METAL DOOR'. This addition has come later. Just imagine: mad Dr. ZEE, hiding (or locking himself in) behind 'heavy metal door' in his lab, he does not go out, don't talk to people, nobody knows what kinda stuff is going on behind that door.... well, he is making some dubs. he he he... well, you know guys, this is again, a sort of extra self-fantasy image. However, this 'METAL DOOR' also has a meaning for me and for which direction this project actually going. And it actually means that it becoms more and more as DUB-music project. So that's how the name was 'born': "ZEE DUB LAB METAL DOOR DUB", or another words: Dr. ZEE DUB from BEHIND METAL DOOR.
So, as you can guess, the tracks in this project also a bit of a mixture of dub music (latest production), dub-fusion and 'historical' non-dub tracks (a few down-tempo tracks from past, which are mostly on "Dr ZEE archive" albums).

I also usually try to create some sort of image-story for each album, some song description, to add some mistery or just to make production more entertaining....

ok, you've got the story he he...

if you have any question, please, feel free to e-mail me any time.

best regards,

and respects,

Mike Zee
