My first computer Dub

Post by Abramelin » Wed Mar 29, 2006 8:37 am

Hi,
here's my first dub I ever made on my shitty PC (ancient AMD 900Mhz, 256 RAM, SoundBlaster Live 5.1). That was an year and half ago.

Well, I would like to hear your opinion, but consider that this song is composed and arranged for two days, and two moths after that I played my guitar and recorded it in real time with all noise, effects, right over the previous tracks, without cutting, mixing or producing the sound anymore. The song is composed in FL Studio 4.52, with PSP Lexicom 84 VST and Amplitube only. That's all.

Also, I compose and play music on computer just for myself, not to promote, sell, or to use my work in any other matherial sense. I don't think it's professional enough. I compose it during high times, just for myself.

Here's the link:
<a href="http://s39.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2VET ... My first computer Dub

hi abramelin

you sure understood the basics of dubbing, i.e. instrumentation, beat and use of delays!

overall you created a nice spacey vibe here.

some ideas how to improve the track:
- the drum sounds are rather generic, as if coming from a standard midi drum module. more character could be achieved by selecting other sounds or adding some type of ambience.

- the bass line regularly plays a variation which is rather strange. it seems to break the chord pattern implied by the rest of the bassline and the other instruments.

- i feel the guitar soloing parts sound a bit too dull and not as clear as they should. this way your musical ideas do not come through clearly and the track sounds cluttered at times. some of the guitar licks sound rather vague and do not help the track much - others are good.

- there is an array of different and perfectly timed echo patterns which is a good thing. however sometimes the delays seem to clash against each other.

just my 50 cent.. sorry i mean 2 cent

I enjoyed it.

I agree the sounds could have more finesse, especially the drums which do sound a bit GM (general midi) like.

To my ears it could do with warming up. I'd recommend trying something like PSP's Vintage Warmer (I don't know if your software can host that).

If you are wanting assurance that you have enough ability to make investing in some better equipment/software worth it, then you have my assurance.

Thanks for feedback guys.

Thanks for kind words and comprehensive and helpful advices.

Interruptor, I completely understand your tips and evaluation. Thanks.

The drum pattern is apparently boring and too midi like, but those delays and echos hold the wibe. I enjoyed composing them. Also, those crossing delays trips I do purposely to break standard schemes. The sound of guitar is surely muddy. Solos may look forced some times, and some melodic parts looks fine.

I played that improvisation through ASIO FX Processor SE + Amplitude (AC 30 amp type + analog delay and chorus simulations), and I recorded that live in real time over file played in Winamp (that file was composed and arranged in FL Studio 4.52). I recorded the whole sound (both song from winamp and guitar improvisation) in Sony Sound Sorge 7.0. This uploaded song is simple mp3 export from that Sony SF 7.0. jam. Don't ask me why, please! I was blissful high, and in rush to play something over finished srappy background.

Primarily, I'm guitar player (from prog rock to post rock/alternative, fusion, funk, dub, trip hop...I like many styles), and I use my computer absolutely only for recording simple ideas on guitar. I have maybe ten or eleven songs like this one. Since I play guitar in three bands, I have my priorities so I have many guitar pedals and effects, but unfortunately too old PC. I would have to save some money to buy analog synth, PC laptop, mixer, and tape recorder (or sempler). But... that's hard core cyber punk for me now.

Neil C, I have that PSP Wintage Warmer and it's great! I forgot to use it here. This was all momentary improvisation wibe and energy boost. Thanks for kind wishes and assurance.

Thanks for feedback again.

Jah heights to one and all.

I like the way those delays 'clash'.

Seems like you have the sofware to try processing the whole mix in various ways.
Levels seem good (on my headphones). I'd try running it through Vintage Warmer just to see what effect that has- in fact when I get home I think I'll try that myself.

Unfortunately, I din't want to process the whole mix - I recorded raw live guitar line with realtime delay-chorus-flanger manipulation(unprocessored without compressor, EQs etc) over the previous track, and that's all.

Sure, it isn't the best way to get high sound quality, but as I said, I was little stoned and in the mood to play that guitar momentary.
When I usually arrange, produce and mix the whole song I do that in Fruity Loops Studio 5.0 or Nuendo, and I use a variety of VST plugins.

Neil C, I look forward to read what could Vintage Warmer do to this song. Thanks.

I put it through the Mix Finalise 1 preset on Vintage Warmer and it certainly helped it to my ears. (you have to match the volumes to do a proper a/b comparison)

The difference is subtle, as full mix processing usually will be, but it takes some of the dry up-frontness off it and makes things sit a little more softly together - like sitting on a bed rather than a concrete floor (in a small way).
