I'm looking for the Sony RE-4s for my Hohner tape delay. If anyone has any information, please help a man in desperate need.

Looking for Sony RE-4 tape catridges

I called them up a few days ago... wouldn't you know it? They just sold the last one a few days before. Just my luck.

In the meantime, I've rigged my old catridge into working order. At least that works

what kind of tape inside the cartridge? I mean size (width)? Maybe there's a way to open-up and replace the tape? It may be hard to do ..if possible at all..

/mz

It's 1/4" tape. I can open the catridge... the tape is on a weird spindle.

I'm young... grown up in the digital age... so I know next to nothing about tape

weird spindle...arhhhh I wish I could see what it is. was trying to find a photo on the net .... if you come across a picture of how these cartridges constructed inside, let me know... If it is regular 1/4" wide tape, then it's good news .... it is all possible to craft-in new tape. Do you have an extra cartridge to mess with? If you can manage to get the tape out without breaking anything, then generally you'd need to figure out the length of the tape loop, then you need to get some new/or used in good condition tape-reel. Now the task would be to figure out how to wind the tape in the same way onto what ever 'reel/spindle' is in the cartridge and also you'll need to splice/connect the tape to make it loop... also make sure you place the tape correctly in regard to record/play head side/tape base side. One side usually is shiny the other may be less shiny and maybe somwhat different/darker color. The shiny side facing the heads.
If the cartridge you have is the only one you've got, then ...well be careful, don't break it.

well, man, I don't know how to help you... cos I can't find any place on the net where you can find this cartridges. E-Bay is the place to look around. try different search-words, like 'tape cartridge', 'sony re4' 'sony re-4' 'sony tape' sony cartridge' 'sony RE 4' etc,,,, sometimes you can find these sots of items in lot-sale or in 'everything else' category, in 'vintage electronics' under some generic title, like "old tapes"... or "vintage cartridge(s)" etc...

good luck

post an update ..how are dealing with this. if you can make a shot of the inside of the cartridge ... and make a .jpg image ... I'd be happy to look at it and see if I may have an idea how to get a new tape into it....

/respects

/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE
/ zee dub lab
