Peavey Raptor
I was in a guitar shop two days ago and tried one of those. I am no big guitar player at all but noted quickly that the hardware at the end of the neck started to resonate in the most ugly way when a specific note was played. Surely this was just a fault of that specific guitar but still.. You should better try the thing yourself before buying.

HM, you really MUST go to the store and try them out. The situation can be described this way, : cheap guitars are built of cheap hardware in a cheap way (means nobody (no responsable human-being) really checks the product out... it's just generally automatic production line). So as result you have a line of products, which you really can not rely on...no guaraties here, and so the situation which Daniel is talking about is rather common. You may be lucky finding a pretty good cheap guitar... but you have to have it in your hands and play around. These guitars are just fine as a gift for a beginner guitar-player.... and that's what they ment to be like, really...
Having said that, again, as I've said before, nowdays these cheap guitars are much better quality, than they used to be, I think two factors here: first - competition (all major guitar makers are trying to compete for beginner/hobbiests wide market) and second: - technology, machines are doing much better job nowdays, you know

Also, again, cheak out Squier guitars ( squier strats ), I hear more and more positive 'noise' from pros about them, some even make comments, ala "Squier quality is so good, so I don't see a real good reason for paing $1000 more for american-maid Fender Strat...", which is kinda silly , but still... heh heh

Also, man, since you are not getting a guitar, which you need to rely on during performance and deep playing details are not the issues, then you'll be happy with pretty much any guitar, as long it does not have some real UGLY problems, like completely no-tune-holding...or buzz all over .... Just go to the store, plug to the amp and play the guitar.... go through the frets on every string/every fret.... play easy and forcefully, do some string-bending, listen to the 'clean sound', play some sliding chords, play hummering/holding (no-picking)...should have some so-so clean note-tone.
If the only option for you to buy it on-line or through catalog, then, man, I don't know, you simply can't expect much.... you only can hope and count on God's Will and Holy-Spirit... hah

good luck,
/respects,
/Mike Zee aka Dr ZEE

God and Spirit is as real as THOMANN´s
30 day money back customer warrenty

Anyway I will probably order on-line in
germany, prices are 2-3 times higher here
my brother has been looking for a seccond-
hand for over a year now in the same price
range, but for no use,. he knows the head-
noise and say it´s easy fixed and promise
to adjust the hole guitar for me,.. worst
case return,.. the more expensive squire
might arrive as a bad model also,.. think
I take the chanse, some reviewers on HC do
complain becourse this is not a pro heavy
guitar,... well what can I say,.. I need
some 12 and 13 size conga-bags anyway :-)

Having a raptor-gigbag also makes a trinity

HM

just go for it, man... make sure you get the 'right' color, heh heh It's great that your bro can help you out. BTW, guitars are those kind of instruments: a great guitar in the wrong hands and screwyyyyy "care" can be turned into really ugly-sounding crippled 'monster'. Well, I can't say that this does work otherway around thou ..heh heh, I mean if you know guitars and can really care, got ear to hear, well, you can sort of keep a "bad" instrument to its top limits... but that's about it. And, well, really the demands are growing as your playing technique(or style)/performance gets more sophisticated and accurate, then every detail of the 'instrument's performance' (or say: response to your movements, call it - playablity of the instrument: good playablity is 'right' response to your move, but you only can judge this when you KNOW your moves and know what the response 'should be' like) becomes an issue for you.

okey, man,
good luck and stuff...

/respects,
/mz aka dr ZEE

On it´s way :-) , black like my Riverhead Bass,
yes how terrible if a pink guitar arrived after
waiting and waiting :-) I will return with info
if it´s hot or not,. fortunately I don´t expect
more than being "useable" and "tuneable"

HM

HAH COOL!
Black is a very solid choice! But it is not a color. It's absence of any color (it's a visual image of a surface of a 'light-terminating material')....
Blue isn't a color either. It's an attitude...

blah blah....
Pink? heh heh.... oh boy.

/later man

/mz aka Dr ZEE

Got it back, all well, keep´s in tune very
well, for days :-),.. even when the "tune
-twister" (handle) is activated many times

The neck is very nice, strings close but no
noise, tune remanins over the hole neck, a
long metal-bolt through the neck enables for
later adjustments

Performing like something at least twise the
price, finish is OK, the gigbag is not heavy
but usefull supplyment, cable + neck-carrier
also, pick-ups ok, extra spring, unbraco´s etc

Have not been recording yet, I am moving to
Copenhagen city, restoring a flat,preparing
for a smaller set-up,. it´s all in boxes :-)

A lot have been sold,.... new things ordered
and the the emu-card I consider still, drums
will be removed to other adsl connected studio
but that´s much later,...

Thomann have been terrible this time, new order
at Digital Village UK, 2 x B1´s, Halion2 bundle
with "latin pecussion" etc. and some dub/ragga-
CD to insure the minimum 250 pouns limit :-)

ME-6 pedal I keep, have not found alternative
yet GNX-2 maybe, no hurry about that, behringer
cheapo earlyer mentioned came short as delay
could only be "tapped" in

HM

HM

HM, get an amp, even some cheap as cheap can be. Having a cab makes you a player ...heh heh :-), even if you perform only for your cat...still makes a difference. You just plug in, push button ..and play..., when ever you get a chance.
;-)

/respects,
/mz

I have a little amp, as I failed to sell it :-)
A little Hohner (with no reverb), now I kepp it
can be used with disc-man also when practising
conga at other location, (down in the buttom of
the building I have a little room),.... I don´t
consider my self "guitar player", Piano, conga,
even bass comes first and then mixing obviously

But I can play most common rhytm/cords and also
learn some small solo´s ,.... the heavy stuff I
leave to my brother, but then again I can try get close before explain him what I would like

Anyway did play a few hours and like it, it is
definately the best guitar I have had, 8 years
ago I had a "vantage-strat" and as a boy some
Teisco half-accoustic I lost when I lent it out
to a "friend" :-(

HM
Peavey Raptor
what happened to strat? sold? trashed?? arrggg? .... that could be couple of thousands $$$ or more ...well depends.

Cool, man, glad you've got the instrument you're happy with. And keep the lil'ampy', don'trash it

/mz
Peavey Raptor
easy,.. it was not a fender-vantage but just a
"vantage" strat-copy (by name) ;-) ,. guess it
was 3 times as expensive but only half as good
as the raptor, yep keep the amp, got a tuner,
got ME-6 for an start, anything I need for now,

It´s just REALY irritating that these POD´s and
amp-simulators multi-fx comes in either guitar
OR bas versions, even more as they are identical
at hardware-level, I would like a combo with an
SPDIF out, but it does not exist,...

btw. thanks for the help and comments, it´s much
appriciated every time,... I have taken a chance
and ended with a good result,.. the noise Daniel
mentioned was fortunately not at this one, only
regret was using Thomann, I will only use them
COD for the future, for extremely good offers
only, and if things don´t arrive give a damm
not even send one single email, they are idiots

HM
