I repost a message by Swinging Chad from the old board where the phaser is beinging termed "an early demo model": --------------------------------------------------------- According to "People Funny Boy" Scratch used these in the early days of Black Ark (1973-75): - Alice mixer (Scratch: "They weren't professional machines they were only toys") - Grantham spring reverb - Roland Space Echo RE201 - Marantz amplifier for instruments - AKG drum mic for vocals - Teac 3340 1/4 inch 4-track recorder - Teac 2-track recorder for mix down In 1975 he added some new equipment: - Soundcraft mixer (replaced the Alice) - Mutron phaser (an early demo model) - better mics - Around 1979 he was given a Teac 1/2 inch 8-track recorder but he didn't like it and almost never used it. If you want to see Scratch working this stuff at Black Ark get the video "Roots Rock Reggae" from Shanachie. And the book "People Funny Boy" by David Katz is a must also. In the course of telling Lee Scratch Perry's life story he tells the whole story of Jamaican music. The best book ever on reggae. In discussing Tubby Katz says that his equipment was mostly handmade and can't really be duplicated. ------------------------------------------------------- |

That looks like a Mutron Bi-Phase to the left of the board in the movie. the evil vintage pimps who hoard and broker efx have made these very expensive lately. What is a good alternative? I love this segment of the movie..the look on Scratch's face when the section gets it right on the second take is worth the price of admission. Does anyone here know..is that Boris Gardiner playing bass in the Black Ark session? |

thanks Chad..I just received the LSP book..and there it was too. And as "Mr Music" was never released..I am starting to use Boris' wicked line as the base (NPI) of a new dub I am working on. After watching that sequence too many times, i could NOT get it out of my head..so i recorded my own version. |

I can tell you about the mogerfogger phaser that the 2 output are not in real stereo but produces a auto pan effect It sounds quite hot and the cv's are really usefull for dubwise |

I've just seen 'Roots, Rock, Reggae' (a must for any dub fan) and the phaser Scratch is using is clearly not one of the production models. It shares definite similarities with the production bi-phase - but 1) the body is a different shape 2) It is mostly white/cream (difficult to be sure which) whereas the production models were blue (or purple in one batch) 3) And it says Super Phasing on it and not Mutron Bi-phase. However the rotary pots, the switches and the style of lettering and the style of lines seperating areas of the phaser - they are all very much like the production models. In short in RRR the evidence that it was a pre-production model is clear to see. Fascinating to see how Scratch 'played' it as the track was being recorded. |

I can find this substantial summary of Lee Perry: http://www.topictracker.org/index.php?&action=topic&id=27&topic=Lee+%27Scratch%27+Perry. on the very interesting site you lead us to but not specifically about the space echo - and wouldn't you be better putting info about the space echo in the sub-section of this forum dedicated to the space echo OR info about Lee Perry in the sub-section dedicated to Lee Perry? |
